The name of Phil Mickelson started trending on social media during the 2025 Ryder Cup. As Team Europe continued to dominate Team USA, there were some rumors of Mickelson being the next American captain. The 6-time major champion would offer his take on this.

After losing in the 2023 edition, Team USA would relieve Zach Johnson of his duties and name Keegan Bradley as the captain in 2024. The 8-time PGA Tour winner, who had missed the previous tournament in Rome, Italy, was elected to lead out the team this year.

Team USA did not get off to a good start as the Europeans blew them away in the opening sessions. They ended the first day trailing their opponents by 3 points.

The pairings made by Bradley were questioned by many users on social media. After he announced his decision to stick to his plan on Day 2 and not make several changes, several fans bashed him and raised their voices over his team selection.

Things did not improve on Day 2 for the Americans. The pairing of Colin Morikawa and Harris English, who lost heavily on Friday against Rory McIlroy and Tommy Fleetwood, lost on Saturday as well, leading to more angry reactions.

In the midst of this, LIV Golfer and Ryder Cup veteran Lee Westwood would spice things up. In a tweet on X, the golfer would tag Mickelson and ask him does he fancy being at the 2027 Ryder Cup at Adare Manor in Ireland.

Hey @PhilMickelson Fancy @TheAdareManor 2027???

This would soon start some speculations regarding him being the next captain of Team USA and replacing Bradley. Golf.com on X would share the quote of Westwood and wrote, “Captain Phil 2027?” in their caption.

There have been several talks in the past about Mickelson being the Ryder Cup captain. He was the vice captain of the team in 2021 when Team USA hammered Europe 19-9 at Whistling Straits.

After speculations started to rise again, the golfer broke his silence regarding this. While replying to the post from Golf.com, the “Lefty” turned down the notion to succeed Bradley as the next captain of his country in 2027.

No rumors. My Ryder Cup involvement is over. I’m happy being a spectator and rooting for Team USA

Mickelson does have experience in leading a team as captain. He serves as the captain of his LIV Golf team, HyFlyers GC. Given his ties with the Saudi-funded tour, the veteran is not so keen on leading his country against the Europeans at the moment.

Phil Mickelson lauds Team USA for their showing on Sunday despite losing the Ryder Cup

Team USA once again had to face defeat against Team Europe in the Ryder Cup. The hosts lost out on the trophy despite a brilliant performance on Sunday. Phil Mickelson would later laud them and shared a heartfelt message.

The Americans entered the course on Sunday, 7 points behind their rivals. With Viktor Hovland‘s neck injury forcing the implementation of the Envelope Rule, there were a total of 11 matches instead of 12.

The hosts got off to a flyer with wins from Cameron Young and Justin Thomas. After Bryson DeChambeau earned half a point against Matt Fitzpatrick after coming back from 5 down, Scottie Scheffler took down Rory McIlroy.

Their fightback suffered a massive blow as Ludvig Aberg defeated Patrick Cantlay 2&1 in the 5th match. Xander Schauffele and J.J. Spaun‘s victory over Jon Rahm and Sepp Straka kept the hopes of an improbable comeback alive for America.

However, after Russell Henley missed two putts on the 17th and 18th holes, Shane Lowry sank his birdie putt on the 18th hole to earn half a point to retain the cup for Europe.

Ben Griffin would then win his match against Rasmus Hojgaard while the singles action between Colin Morikawa and  Tyrrell Hatton  and  Sam Burns  and Robert MacIntyre ended as ties. This saw the Europeans win the 45th Ryder Cup with a 15-13 score.

Following the loss, Phil Mickelson would take to his X account and share a message for Team USA.

Team USA gave one of the most incredible and inspiring Sunday performances. Amy and I want to send our best to Captain Keegan and the rest of the team who played every shot with so much heart and represented the United States so well. Go USA

The 8.5 points earned by Team USA on Sunday were the joint-most by any team in modern-day Ryder Cup history. They feel just 1.5 points shots off from completing one of the greatest comebacks in golf history.
