Phil Mickelson did not make it to the weekend at the 2025 Masters, but he did watch Rory McIlroy win the green jacket Sunday.
McIlroy's long-awaited triumph at Augusta was a golf story for the ages and will surely be discussed for decades to come. The 35-year-old finally completed the career grand slam that had eluded him since 2014, winning the Masters for the first time after several close calls. The victory was also McIlroy's first major win in general in 11 years.
"It's the best day of my golfing life," McIlroy said Sunday night. "I've literally made my dreams come true."
McIlroy led by two shots to start Sunday but immediately lost the lead. He regained, going up by four shots at the turn but blew that advantage in a span of four holes.
Eventually, the Northern Irishman took a one-shot lead into 18, but bogeyed the hole when a par would have clinched the championship. Mercifully, McIlroy secured the green jacket with a tremendous birdie on the first playoff hole against Justin Rose.
Following the round, Mickelson, a three-time Masters champion, called the finish "incredible" in a tweet congratulating McIlroy.
"What in incredible Masters. Congrats to Rory on his win and for completing the career grand slam. Amazing," Mickelson wrote.
McIlroy is now the sixth golfer all-time to complete the career grand slam, joining Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan, Gary Player, Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods.
Woods also offered congratulations to his longtime friend and fellow PGA Tour competitor Sunday night.
"Welcome to the club @McIlroyRory," Woods wrote.
"Completing the grand slam at Augusta is something special. Your determination during this round, and this entire journey has shown through, and now you’re a part of history. Proud of you!"
McIlroy's next major appearance will be at the PGA Championship in Charlotte next month.
