Phil Mickelson’s Awful Scottie Scheffler Take Resurfaces During Open Championship Win

Earlier this year, LIV Golf star Phil Mickelson went out on a limb and let loose one of the hottest golf takes we've seen in quite some time.

"Here’s a hot take: Does Scottie (Scheffler) win in 2025 before the Ryder Cup? I don’t think so."

Mickelson wrote that on X in response to PGA analyst Trevor Immelman on March 16. Since then, the take has gotten pretty cold. Up to that point, Scheffler had only a pair of top-10 finishes in his first five starts of the season. But the run that he's gone on after Mickelson's tweet is going to go down as one of the better in tour history.

Since the tweet, Scheffler has played in 11 tournaments, winning four times — two of which were major championships — with three other top-five finishes, and seven top-10 finishes. Notably, Scheffler has not finished outside of the top 10 once since March.

This run was capped off with an utterly dominant performance this weekend at The Open Championship, where Scheffler blew away the field to win his second major of the year, and the fourth of his career. Scheffler finished the tournament at 17-under par, which was four shots clear of second place. He started the final round with a four-stroke lead, and held it comfortably throughout the day.

Compare all of that to the fact that Mickelson predicted that Scheffler wouldn't win until the Ryder Cup in September, and it makes the take one of the worst we've seen in quite a while. With Scheffler's dominance on Sunday, golf fans were sure to give Mickelson a hard time once again on social media.

"This probably should’ve been Take of the Year. That’s on me," Barstool's Big Cat said.

"This may go down as the worst take in golf history," Golf.com's Zephyr Melton said.

Despite his ill-advised opinions on other golfers, Mickelson played well at The Open, making the cut and finishing at 1-over par after a 4-under final round.

Seeing Scheffler run away with the victory did not come as much surprise, as he is undoubtedly the best golfer in the world when everything is clicking. He proved Mickelson wrong after his winless streak earlier in the year. Now the question begs to be asked: How many more times will Scheffler win before the Ryder Cup in September?
