Pieters Traded to 4Aces GC on the LIV Tour

One of the unique parts of LIV Golf is the ability to trade players from team to team.

While it doesn’t happen often, players move as they did on Monday when the 4Aces GC, captained by Dustin Johnson, announced on social media that they had acquired the contract of Belgium’s Thomas Pieters of the Range Goats GC.

Pieters finished 30th in points in 2024, with two top-10 finishes, including a tie for fifth in Singapore—his best result since joining LIV Golf before the 2023 season.

“Happy to have Thomas on the team,” Johnson said. “He’s a great addition, great player and makes the team stronger. Really excited for next season.”

Pieters, who joined LIV in 2023, played full seasons on the Bubba Watson-captained Range Goats, with three top 10s in 27 starts.

“I’m super-excited about playing for DJ and I look forward to push him as hard as I can.” The 32-year-old Pieters said.

With the addition of Pieters, the 4Aces GC has five players under contract: Pat Perez, Patrick Reed, Harold Varner, Johnson, and Pieters.

However, as of January 1, Perez will be a free agent, bringing the 4Aces GC back to four players for the 2025 season.

The RangeGoats are not unfamiliar to trading players; a year ago, they traded Tailor Gooch, the 2023 LIV Golf Individual Champion, to Smash GC for Matthew Wolff and also acquired Peter Uihlein for Varner in a deal with the 4Aces.

“The decision to trade Thomas Pieters was not easy,” said RangeGoats GM Randall Wells. “He has been a valuable member of RangeGoats GC since we launched two years ago. But the nature of LIV and team golf requires teams to make tough decisions. Like other team sports, we have to take into account a host of factors, including player contracts and the fact we have a limited number of roster spots. In this case, we felt the roster flexibility and the possibilities it opens was best for the RangeGoats GC.”

The Range Goats GC currently has two players under contract, Uihlein and Wolff.

Watson lost his playing privileges at the end of 2024 when he finished 53rd on the LIV points list and was relegated.

This is the fourth trade in LIV history. In 2023, Carlos Ortiz rejected his automatic extension with the Fireballs to join Torque.

Talor Gooch went to Smash for Matt Wolff (RangeGoats), and Harold Varner III moved to the 4Aces in exchange for Peter Uihlein (RangeGoats).

The Pieters trade is the first single-player trade in the league's history. While this can be seen as the RangeGoats GC giving up a player for nothing in exchange, it’s worth noting that they gained a roster spot and financial flexibility by offloading a 7-figure contract to pursue a player they want and are in active conversations with.
