Rickie Fowler fired a 6-under 64 in the second round of the Charles Schwab Challenge at Colonial Country Club. He's currently in a tie for fourth place at 6 under par, putting him in contention heading into the weekend.
This is an unfamiliar situation for Fowler in 2025. Through 11 starts, the American has recorded only two top-20 finishes and none better than T15. He did fire a 7-under 63 in the first round of the Truist Championship a few weeks ago, but he shot just 1 under over the next three rounds to fall eight shots behind champion Sepp Straka.
Friday's 64 was a great sign of improvement for Fowler, who's struggled with his iron play and putting all season. The 36-year-old currently ranks fifth in the Charles Schwab Challenge field in strokes gained on approach (2.362) and sixth in strokes gained from putting (2.110) in the second round. He hit 11-of-14 fairways, 16-of-18 greens in regulation and made more than 88 feet of putts on Friday.
Have a day, Rickie! ️

Fowler came out of the gates hot with three birdies in his first four holes, and he made three more birdies before the turn to shoot a 6-under 29 on the front 9. He cooled off on the back nine with one bogey and just one birdie and one bogey, but he'll be happy with a 64 to put him on the first page of the leaderboard.
This has quickly turned into a big week for Fowler, who sits in 99th place in the FedEx Cup standings. Only the top 70 players in the standings at the end of the 2025 season will make the FedEx Cup Playoffs, and the top 50 will be fully exempt for the signature events in 2026. If Fowler finishes outside the top 70, he'll have to fight for full-time status in the FedEx Cup Fall.
A win at the Charles Schwab Challenge would give Fowler a two-year exemption on the PGA Tour. No matter how he finishes this week, it's great to see Fowler back in the mix.
