Scottie Scheffler was simply too much for Robert MacIntyre in the end at the BMW Championship.
There is a reason why Scheffler is the clear world number one, and he showed it again with how he played this week.
MacIntyre was not really in it by Sunday afternoon at Caves Valley, but the 29-year-old star still had to come back from four shots down over the final 18 holes.
The Scottish golfer probably did not need to face an annoyed Scheffler heading into Sunday’s final round in Baltimore, either. But that was exactly what happened.
On Saturday, Robert MacIntyre faced heckling from American fans at the BMW Championship.
But on Sunday, it was the man raised in Dallas who managed to shut out all of that noise and claim his 18th PGA Tour win.
Scheffler was one shot ahead of MacIntyre with two holes left to play at the BMW Championship.
Both players missed the green left on 17, but it was the world No. 1 who found a bit of magic, holing out from a tough spot and putting an end to MacIntyre’s chances.
After a final round 73 that saw him finish second, MacIntyre still took time to speak to the media. He was asked about Scheffler’s chip-in and gave an honest response.
The Scot said: “Yeah, he’s hit a great shot. Nothing you can do with that. I just didn’t play good enough.
“Walking up I think it’s 15, I’m talking to myself. I wasn’t nice to myself up until that point. Scottie has missed a putt, and then I’m like, right if you were given one shot back going up 15 at the start of the week, would you have taken it? 100 percent I would have taken it. Yes, I had the lead but it doesn’t matter until the final putt on the 18th green and the 72nd hole. I still had a chance.
“When he’s pitched that in on 17 and then he’s hit the perfect tee shot on 18, it’s pretty much game over just then. You’re playing for second place at that point.”
Scheffler kept pressing throughout Sunday afternoon, eventually chipping away at MacIntyre’s lead before delivering what felt like a decisive moment late on in Baltimore.
MacIntyre had already dealt with hecklers on Saturday, and it appeared to happen again during Sunday’s final round.
MacIntyre was asked about that, this time by a single fan, on the 12th hole. He replied sarcastically.
He said: “How many?”
The Scot was then asked if he thought security had done enough to keep things under control.
MacIntyre did not want to go into it further, replying: “I’m not going to comment.”
The final round turned into a tough watch for MacIntyre as Scheffler pulled away late. But there is every chance the experience will help him more in the long run than any win could have.
