Rory McIlroy explains why his 66 wasn’t enough to leave him satisfied in Dubai opener

Rory McIlroy opened the DP World Tour Championship in style, shooting a six-under 66 to get his week underway.

The DP World Tour paid tribute to McIlroy by naming an award after him ahead of the event, which marks the close of the current season.

The Northern Irishman is the defending champion in Dubai, and that win also secured his third straight Race to Dubai title – his sixth overall.

Colin Montgomerie set a high bar during his career, winning seven consecutive Race to Dubai titles and adding another later on to reach eight overall.

But after an impressive opening round at Jumeirah Golf Estates’ Earth Course, McIlroy looks well-placed to edge closer to Montgomerie’s record this week.

He ended the first day tied for third, two shots back from leader Michael Kim, who posted an eight-under 64.

It was also his 50th round of 66 or better at the Earth Course. However, even with that achievement, McIlroy was not entirely satisfied.

“Yeah, I felt like that was probably one of the best sort of approach play rounds I’ve had in a long time. My wedge play felt really sharp. Had a lot of good iron shots.

“I feel like I don’t want to sound like I’m that disappointed, but I feel like I left a few out there. I missed a couple of short ones.

“Overall, it was a really solid start on a golf course that I’m very comfortable on and historically I’ve played very well on.”

While he might have liked to be leading after the first round, the way he is playing, it would not be a surprise if he is at the top after Friday.

This is not exactly out of character for McIlroy. He has always held himself to an incredibly high standard throughout his career.

And when asked about having no weakness after his round, with commentators noting improvements in his wedge play and putting, he gave an honest assessment of where things stand.

“I think when my game is on, it feels that way.

“But I definitely feel like I’ve made big strides in those two departments in the game over the last few years. I finished in the top 5 in strokes gained putting on the PGA Tour this year for the first time.

“Definitely I feel like my wedge play is a lot better, and you know, if I drive the ball well, then I give myself so many opportunities from inside 150.

“And if that part of my game is sharp, you know, I feel like I give myself plenty of opportunities. I think that’s why when I do play well, I’m consistently up there,” McIlroy stated.

The Earth Course has always suited him well. He won there just last year and has performed consistently whenever he plays this event.

Amazing as it sounds, €7.7 million of his DP World Tour earnings have come at this one course alone – more than 11% of his total prize money on tour.
