Every once in a while, a light-hearted jab or one-liner meant to troll someone is so good that all you can do is laugh about it and give a tip of the cap. This was the case for Rory McIlroy ahead of the opening day of the 2025 Ryder Cup after he got trolled in such an impressive fashion by one fan that even his Team Europe teammates had to give credit where credit was due.

Ahead of the opening-round matchups for the Ryder Cup on Friday, Sept. 26, Team Europe was going through a practice round, and not surprisingly, the golfers received a bit of trash talk from Team U.S. supporters. However, it was a well-timed jab at McIlroy that quickly made the rounds on social media.

Rory McIlroy Reacts to Getting Trolled at 2025 Ryder Cup Practice

With the 2025 Ryder Cup taking place at the Bethpage Black Course at Bethpage State Park in Farmingdale, New York, the crowds are understandably expected to be pro-Team U.S., and on Thursday, that fact began to shine through.

In a clip posted by the Golf Channel’s Gary Williams, McIlroy is seen buttoning the top of his shirt. standing with the rest of the European team.

"You don’t need a button to choke, Rory!” a fan yelled at McIlroy.

The jab was impressive enough that even McIlroy appreciated it, laughing and nodding his head in approval. His Ryder Cup teammates may have enjoyed it even more than McIlroy did.

This is the type of ribbing that American players are certainly hoping continues through the start of the action on Thursday and for the rest of the 2025 Ryder Cup.

Collin Morikawa Is ‘All for’ the Trash Talk, Hopes It Ramps up at 2025 Ryder Cup

The moment came just one day after a member of the United States team, Collin Morikawa, expressed his desire to hear more from the home crowd, calling the action “tame” through the start of the practice rounds. While he admitted that Friday will be “absolute chaos,” he urged fans to lean into the chaos while speaking to the media on Wednesday, Sept. 24.

“I'll be honest, I think it's kind of tame so far, Tuesday and Wednesday,” Morikawa said, via Flushing It Golf. “I know tomorrow is going to be pretty bad but I hope Friday is just absolute chaos. I'm all for it. I think it feeds into who we are and the American players and the American Team. We want it. Like we want to use that to our advantage.”

“I think every sport uses their home crowd to their advantage, and just because we don't play in a setting like this doesn't mean the craziness of New York and the rest of the country that people are traveling in from, it doesn't mean that we can't use that to our advantage. I think we really have to tap into that. I hope they come strong. Watching all these kids, I know they want autographs, but come Friday, I hope they go crazy.”

Here’s to hoping that Thursday leads to Morikawa getting his wish once the action gets underway on Friday. The 2025 Ryder Cup gets underway with the opening match teeing off at 7:10 a.m. ET, with USA duo Bryson DeChambeau and Justin Thomas facing Jon Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton of Team Europe.
