Rory McIlroy not happy with President Trump's handling of coronavirus pandemic

It appears Rory McIlroy won't be hitting the links with Donald Trump any time soon.

The world's top-ranked golfer received an invitation to play with the president and two others at Trump International Golf Club in Palm Beach, Fla., but he won't be attending.

McIlroy defended his decision on a recent McKellar Golf Podcast and also criticized Trump for his handling of the coronavirus pandemic in the United States.

“We’re in the midst of something that’s pretty serious right now and the fact that he’s trying to politicize it and make it a campaign rally, saying that (the U.S.) administers the most tests in the world like it’s a contest," McIlroy said, according to Yahoo Sports' Cassandra Negley. …

"It’s just not the way a leader should act and there is a bit of diplomacy that you need to show and I just don’t think he’s shown that, especially in these times.”

Although McIlroy received plenty of backlash after playing golf with Trump a month after his presidential inauguration in 2017, McIlroy reiterated that it simply was a game of golf ... not an endorsement.

Trump rarely puts up with criticism — whether it be from reporters or a professional athletes such as McIlroy — so it's hard to imagine the president will be inviting the 31-year-old McIlroy over for a few holes of golf in the future.

McIlroy has two homes in the U.S. and is reportedly working his way toward American citizenship.

While the PGA Tour currently is on pause due to the coronavirus pandemic, it is looking to start things up again next month with the Charles Schwab Challenge in Texas on June 11.

McIlroy said he'll be participating in the challenge after hearing of the health and safety protocols put into place.
