Rory McIlroy posts his first message on social media since winning The Masters as Tommy Fleetwood also reacts

Rory McIlroy will still be in celebration mode after winning The Masters.

The Northern Irishman successfully defended his title at Augusta National, claiming the green jacket by a single stroke.

He edged out world number one and two-time champion Scottie Scheffler on the final day, securing a sixth career major win in the process.

And it is a memorable victory that McIlroy has now celebrated on social media, with The Masters champion sharing his gratitude for everyone who has played a part in his success.

Rory McIlroy celebrates ‘incredibly special’ win at The Masters

Sharing footage of the win with quotes from himself, McIlroy posted on Instagram: “Winning a second Masters is incredibly special and would not have been possible without the people who have supported me along the way.”

It was indeed a special moment for the 36-year-old, who finished his week at Augusta on 12-under after rounds of 67, 65, 73 and 71.

Despite holding a six-shot lead after two rounds, another playoff looked increasingly likely on Sunday, with Scheffler finishing strong.

He defeated Justin Rose via that method to win The Masters in 2025, but managed to hold on this time around to avoid that fate.

The Northern Irishman is also a two-time winner of the PGA Championship, and has won the US Open and The Open Championship on one occasion each.

McIlroy can now target the career double grand slam, which only golfing legends Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods have managed to achieve.

Tommy Fleetwood congratulates The Masters champion Rory McIlroy

McIlroy certainly isn’t the only player to have taken to social media to share an update on their time from Augusta National.

His European Ryder Cup teammate Tommy Fleetwood has done the same, having been in contention to claim a maiden major win at Augusta last week.

He posted on Instagram: “Always a special week at The Masters, thank you to all the patrons for the support and to the members and staff for looking after us all so well.

“Congratulations Rory McIlroy, such a special win!”

It’s a lovely touch from Fleetwood, who was among a number of players seemingly capable of claiming the green jacket on Sunday.

But after impressing with rounds of 71, 68 and 73, a four-over 76 in the final round caused him to plummet the leaderboard.

Fleetwood eventually finished in a tie for 33rd on even-par, and will be desperate to bounce back from that disappointment this week.

The Englishman is in the field for the RBC Heritage, which gets underway at Harbour Town Golf Links on Thursday.

Justin Thomas is also among the star-studded field for the latest PGA Tour event, which the American won last season.
