Although they were paired together for the final round of the Masters this past April, there was no love lost between Bryson DeChambeau and Rory McIlroy.
McIlroy defeated Justin Rose in a playoff to win his first title at Augusta National and complete the career Grand Slam. DeChambeau, meanwhile, struggled in the final round and finished tied for fifth place.
Shortly after McIlroy won the Masters, reporters asked DeChambeau about their time on the course together. He revealed that McIlroy gave him the silent treatment from start to finish.
"No idea," DeChambeau said. "Didn't talk to me once all day."
When asked if he tried to initiate a conversation with McIlroy during the final round of the Masters, DeChambeau replied, "He wouldn't talk to me."
With the PGA Championship set to begin this Thursday, McIlroy has finally addressed this situation.
During a press conference this Wednesday, McIlroy made it clear that he wasn't sure why DeChambeau's comments gained so much traction. The Northern Irishman champion was at Masters to win a title. Everything else was outside noise to him.
"I don't know what he was expecting," McIlroy told reporters, via Sports Illustrated. "We’re trying to win the Masters. I’m not going to try to be his best mate out there."
McIlroy then said his actions aren't a reflection of his feelings towards DeChambeau. He claims there's no bad blood between them.
"Look, everyone approaches the game different ways. Yeah, like I was focused on myself and what I needed to do. That’s really all that it was. It wasn’t anything against him or against—it’s just I felt that’s what I needed to do to try to get the best out of myself that day."
It'll be interesting to see if McIlroy and DeChambeau get paired together this weekend at Quail Hollow Club.
