Cameron Young has picked up his first PGA Tour win, taking the Wyndham Championship title in North Carolina with a commanding performance.
Young’s win at Sedgefield brought back memories of Scottie Scheffler’s dominant showing at the CJ CUP Byron Nelson earlier this year.
Scheffler had won that event by eight shots at TPC Craig Ranch, capping it off with a final-round 63 to hold his lead from the previous day.
Young started quickly on Sunday, picking up five birdies in his opening six holes and putting himself well clear of the field early on.
Young’s win has pushed him into the top 20 of the FedEx Cup standings just in time for the playoffs, and it could also play a key role in his push for a Ryder Cup spot later this year.
He started the week 19th in the qualification standings, and without a PGA Tour win to his name, there were questions about whether he had done enough to catch Keegan Bradley’s eye. But this performance will be hard to ignore.
Speaking after his final round, US vice-captain Gary Woodland praised Young’s play and suggested this win is just the beginning for him.
“Awesome, awesome. We all know he’s got a lot of talent. He’s been out here for a while, I think seven runner-up finishes or whatever it is,” said Woodland.
“The start that he got off to today, I saw the leaderboard, him taking off, it’s awesome. I’m happy for him, he deserves it. I think it’s just the start.”
When asked what Young would bring to the team if selected, Woodland pointed to his skills off the tee and improvements with the putter: “I mean, the way he drives the golf ball, his putting stats this year are really good as well. Cam’s got a lot of talent and anytime you can bring a lot of talent, it helps everybody. I’m happy for him. Like I said, I think it’s just the start for him.”
Cameron Young has been on the verge of a breakthrough for a while now. Back in 2022, he finished inside the top three at two majors, including a runner-up spot to Cameron Smith at St Andrews during The Open.
He also took fourth place at the US Open earlier this year. And interestingly, Keegan Bradley will likely understand exactly where Young’s coming from, given they went through a similar situation in 2023.
Young, ranked ninth, and Bradley, ranked eleventh, were the highest-ranked American players not selected for the Rome team. With the Ryder Cup less than two months away, their current form and momentum are unlikely to go unnoticed.
