As some PGA Tour athletes and arguably the entire sport gear up for the Ryder Cup, the first stop on that journey is the Procore Championship. An event where some of the brightest faces of golf will compete in long awaited action, some of the last being at the Tour Championship. Some top names will be in attendance, a large number of the USA Ryder Cup team as well. One athlete who will not be in competition and for good reason, is the veteran Xander Schauffele. After welcoming the birth of his son, Schauffele decided to stay back home with his family and provide the much needed moral support from afar.

Getting Back In The Groove

It may be more than just attempting to re-find himself on the golf course, but also taking care of his newborn son Victor. Schauffele came into this 2025 PGA Tour season battling some reported rib injuries, keeping him out the first two months. After battling his way back into competition, the veteran still had many lows throughout. Not able to grab a single win this season, while also missing his chance to qualify for the Tour Championship. The first time in his nine year career on the tour that that feat has happened, but adding fuel to the fire.

“At some point I’m going to sit back and reflect and try and learn something from it. Yeah, it was mentally a long season for me even though it was short,” Schauffele said. “So, physically I feel a lot better, which is a plus. No sort of recurring injury, which is a plus. About the only positives I can think of so far.”

Attempting to navigate through the many ups and downs of a career within golf, is something even the top athletes battle through. While not performing up to his standard personally, Schauffele was still able to score two of the biggest wins in the season. The first and most important being the birth of his son, secondly earning his spot on the Ryder Cup team. A spot within the best of the best, something that stands out even more than his mishaps this season.

Fatherhood New Normal

For many of the athletes on the USA Ryder Cup team, they are fathers in an attempt to create lifelong legacies. The choice for Schauffele to stay back from the Procore tournament was one easier said than done. With what could be more added motivation into his play, the veteran is one many people were eager to see compete.

“There’s nothing worse than trying your hardest and playing like a**,” Schauffele said. “It’s the worst combo. Some of us do it, some of us don’t. It’s been a while since I have, and I did it for a few weeks now, and it sucked.

With the Ryder Cup set to take place Sept. 26th, this Procore Championship will allow athletes to get a good guideline on things before competition. Although Schauffele is staying back home with family, you can only expect him to stay dialed in with his teammates. In a season filled with many downs, the 31-year-old is winning once again.
