Europe’s victory at the Ryder Cup included wins over Scottie Scheffler and Patrick Cantlay, two of several Americans who came up short as the hosts lost 15-13.
Scheffler had a tough week at Bethpage Black, managing just one point from five matches. Cantlay also struggled, finishing with 1.5 points as the Americans were beaten on their own turf.
Xander Schauffele and Cameron Young led the way for Team USA with three points each, while Justin Thomas and J.J. Spaun contributed two apiece.
Keegan Bradley faced heavy criticism after the loss, while Luke Donald received plenty of praise for his handling of Europe’s campaign in New York.
Two members of Team USA have now spoken out after the painful loss. One of them is the world number one, Scottie Scheffler.
“Representing Team USA at the Ryder Cup was a great honour. There’s nothing like the pride of competing alongside such incredible teammates.
“Thank you for everyone that came out to cheer us on this past week – it’s something I’ll never forget. A hard-fought week and a major congratulations to Team Europe,” he wrote on Instagram.
Cantlay also shared his thoughts, saying: “Playing in the Ryder Cup and representing the US is the greatest honour in our game.
“Really tough to come up short for our home fans but proud of this team and the unforgettable memories with them.
“Special thank you to our captain Keegan Bradley for everything he put into this and did for our team.”
Scheffler and Cantlay struggled to make an impact for the US, often finding themselves outmatched by Europe despite strong backing from the home crowd.
Meanwhile, Shane Lowry was all smiles after helping Europe keep hold of the Ryder Cup, sharing a positive message after sealing the win at Bethpage.
Lowry’s putt retained the Ryder Cup for Donald’s side. The Irishman later wrote on Instagram: “I’ve been lucky enough to achieve some amazing things in this game but last week tops them all.
“The Ryder Cup means a lot to me and to have the opportunity to hole that putt to retain the cup on Sunday was a privilege.
“I love the lads on this team and love being a part of it. Luke Donald is the best captain and guy there is. I’m so happy for him and thankful he trusted me again to help this team to victory.
“As I was walking up 18 on Sunday I couldn’t help but think of all the European and Irish legends that have gone before me in this great tournament.
“From Eamonn Darcy back in 1987, Christy Jnr in 89, Philip Walton at Oak Hill in 95 to Paul in 2002 and Gmac at Celtic Manor in 2010. There is just something with the Irish and the Ryder Cup.”
Ireland will host their first-ever Ryder Cup in 2027 at Adare Manor, adding another chapter to their history with the event.
Lowry will be hoping to be part of that team too as Europe looks to defend again while America aim for their first win since Whistling Straits in 2021.
