Scottie Scheffler will reunite with his long-term caddie, Ted Scott, for the Tour Championship after Scott missed the last two PGA Tour playoff events for family reasons. He missed both the FedEx St. Jude Championship and the BMW Championship, forcing Scheffler to turn to two different stand-ins during one of the season’s most crucial stretches.
Scott had been absent for nearly two weeks due to a family emergency, missing the FedEx St. Jude Championship and the BMW Championship. In that time, Scheffler had two temporary stand-ins. The World No. 1 used fill-in caddie and good friend Brad Payne for the final round of the FedEx St. Jude Championship, where they finished T3, but he decided to go for a new face in Michael Cromie at the BMW Championship.
Scheffler secured his 18th TOUR title even with a different caddie for the second straight week. The 29-year-old made a remarkable comeback in the final round to win his fifth PGA Tour title of the season. The victory also marked the first win of his career without Ted Scott on the bag. Michael Cromie was right there to witness Scheffler’s dramatic hole-out on the second-to-last hole, which secured the victory over 54-hole leader Robert MacIntyre.
Scott has not caddied for Scheffler since the third round of the FedEx St. Jude Championship about two weeks ago when he returned home unexpectedly for a private family matter. However, he will now return for the Tour Championship at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta after being signed up on the PGA TOUR caddie list for the event. Since teaming up in 2021, the duo has built one of the most successful partnerships in professional golf. Scott has been on the bag for 17 of Scheffler’s 18 PGA Tour wins, including both of his major championships.
Scheffler enters the Tour Championship as the clear favorite after an impressive comeback victory at the BMW Championship. The return of his trusted caddie gives the 29-year-old an extra boost as he chases his sixth PGA Tour title of the season and aims to become the first player to win back-to-back FedExCups. He enters the Tour Championship as the points leader in a 30-man field. The tournament begins on Thursday and returns to a traditional format, dropping the staggered-start system used in recent seasons.
Although Scott kept the reasons for his absence private, Scheffler confirmed that his caddie’s family was doing well. Now with Scott back on the bag, Scheffler will be relying on their strong partnership at East Lake as he looks to finish his remarkable season with another win.
