This year, Scottie Scheffler has managed to reach 100 consecutive weeks in the No. 1 spot in the OWGR. He is currently keeping his lead in that race, and is still leaving other top players in the dust. It’s an achievement so hard to get that the last golfer to get it was Tiger Woods. Scheffler is working on accomplishing something else, something that he almost lost during the Charles Schwab Challenge. Scheffler is currently in 7th for most cuts made in a row, and is looking to continue his streak that now sits at 55.
Scottie Scheffler has been playing professionally since 2018 and has competed in a total of 162 events. He only missed the cut in 24 of those events, and managed to get in the top 10 of 77 events with a total of 17 wins under his belt, including three major wins. All of this is according to his PGA player bio on the official site. This is all on top of making the cut 55 events in a row. Only six other golfers have been able to make more, with, of course, Tiger Woods having 142.
Xander Schauffele is ahead of Scheffler at 64, but if all goes well. It is predicted that both golfers will surpass Dow Finsterwald, who sits at 72, by the end of the year. All he has to do is keep making the cut at every event he attends in the meantime. However, this past weekend, his streak almost came to a halt after a bad first two rounds.
Despite being a very clearly skilled player, Sheffler almost lost his streak at the Charles Schwab Challenge. What happened is that his first two rounds were just abysmal for him. He only hit 15 out of 28 fairways, his putting was shaky at two strokes on the green, and he capped both rounds off at a 68 and 71. Very unusual for Scheffler, and he was visibly troubled by his performance while making rookie mistakes along the way.
Yet he managed to squeeze on by and made the cut, continuing his streak. Then on Saturday, something changed, and he made a more typical 64 for his third round. He was clearly off kilter and left fans on the edge of their seats wondering if the world No. 1 would make it. Sure, he didn’t win the event, but he secured his spot for the final half and made it to the top five.
Despite a bad start to his most recent event, Sheffler held on. He is accruing all these records and is determined to keep them going, even on a bad day. Scheffler is well on the way to being able to compete with Tiger Woods’ records on all fronts. Through the OWGR, his cut streak, and setting the stage for his own career grand slam after his PGA Championship victory, despite the event’s complications with mud balls. Who knows, he may get the same standing that Woods got for himself in the 2000s, being the face of the Tour. The future looks bright for Sheffler, and his record continues to be strong.
