It was Scottie Scheffler all along. Scheffler, who captured his first Open Championship victory this past Sunday, admitted on “ Pardon My Take” that he was the one who farted on hole No. 17 during Round 1 of the tournament.
At the time, Scheffler was staring at a downhill iron shot toward the green. Someone then ripped an incredibly audible fart, and the NBC commentary team couldn’t contain their laughter. Most assumed it was a patron, but nope, it was the best golfer in the world.
“Yeah, that was me,” Scheffler admitted. “… You’re out there for like six hours. You’re eating some different foods over there — stuff is gonna happen in life.”

Viral fart and all, Scheffler landed the green just a few feet from the hole. Three days later, he was in possession of the Claret Jug after finishing four strokes ahead of runner-up Harris English.
As for the fart, Scheffler initially thought nothing of it. But after heading back into the clubhouse after his round, Scheffler learned it had gone viral.
“You never know with the boom mics there and what they’re going to pick up. I’m definitely surprised it hasn’t happened more in the past,” Scheffler said. “I really didn’t think anything about it and then after we got inside, Xander [Schauffele] was showing me the video. I see myself standing on 17 and I’m like, ‘Oh, I know what this is.'”
The fart was well executed, Scheffler said: “Good. It had a nice sound to it. It was perfect. … No, [it did not smell]. We were outside, and the breeze was blowing. Somebody else caught it, not me.”
Of course, this did not overshadow what Scheffler accomplished across four days at Royal Portrush. Scheffler was his usual dominant self, at one point owning a seven-stroke lead over the field in the Final Round.
Just 29, Scheffler is a U.S. Open win away from completing golf’s Grand Slam. Scheffler now has 17 total wins — all coming since 2022.
