Shane Lowry frustrated after admitting to ‘stupid’ mistake at India Championship

Shane Lowry is in a good position after two rounds at the DP India World Championship, though he admitted it could have been even better if not for what he called a ‘stupid’ error.

Outside of his strong play in the Sunday singles at the Ryder Cup, Lowry has struggled for form since May. He’s hoping to close out his season on a high note by taking home the title in Dubai.

Lowry also enjoyed playing alongside Tommy Fleetwood and Luke Donald during the opening rounds. The layout suits his game too, with its emphasis on accuracy off the tee.

After carding back-to-back 67s to reach 11 under par, Lowry is right in contention. Still, he knows there was an opportunity to be even closer to the India Championship through two rounds.

Lowry’s second round at the India Championship affected by one costly mistake

Lowry finished his second round at the Delhi Golf Club on Friday morning with four birdies and a bogey.

His only bogey came on a par five, which might explain why it stuck with him, despite an otherwise solid round.

When asked if he was satisfied with his round of 69, Lowry said: “Yeah, I got off to a bit of a slow-ish start. Not much happened on the front nine, and then I made a stupid bogey on the par 5 from the middle of the fairway. Quite frustrated around the turn. But I felt like I finished well, and I played some nice golf on the way in.”

“Yeah, the course is there for the taking if you hit good shots, but if you hit it offline it’s very, very tricky. Yeah, I’m happy with my two days’ work.”

He said: “No, I think you need to play this golf course the way you see it. There’s a lot of holes where you’re not hitting much off the tee and you’re trying to get it in play and that’s why I think it suits me.

There’s a lot of mid-irons out there which is a strength of my game. Play to my strengths this week, and hopefully I can be dangerous this weekend.”

Why Shane Lowry is winless in 2025

Lowry hasn’t hit top form at any stage this season. His PGA Tour season included two top-5s and four top-10s, while his best DP World Tour finish was a tie for 15th at the Irish Open in September.

A look at his stats this year paints a clear picture of why wins have been hard to come by. His performance off the tee and on the greens simply hasn’t been up to scratch.

On the PGA Tour, he ranked 83rd in strokes gained off the tee and just 123rd in strokes gained putting.

If he’s going to turn things around and win this week at Delhi Golf Club, he’ll need to improve both areas over the weekend.
