Most leading players are choosing to skip the 2026 Cognizant Classic as they prepare for upcoming Signature Events on the PGA Tour schedule.
Several high-ranked names have opted for rest instead of adding another start.
Rory McIlroy, the career Grand Slam winner, is not in the field. Scottie Scheffler, a 20-time PGA Tour winner, has also chosen to bypass the event.
Shane Lowry, however, is taking a different route.
Instead of sitting out, Shane Lowry has committed to playing five consecutive weeks on the PGA Tour. While others are reducing their schedules ahead of major tournaments, he is continuing through this stretch of events.
Speaking about his decision during the press conference of the 2026 Cognizant Classic on Wednesday, Lowry said:
“I feel like I’ve been out on TOUR a long time now, and I play a lot of tournaments where I don’t particularly like the golf course, or I don’t play well around there. I need to take advantage of the courses that I play well on and that I like playing.”

The 38-year-old explained that if the stretch involved five straight weeks away from home, he would not commit to it. However, this week he is staying at home, which changes the situation.
The three-time-PGA Tour Winner can do this because the schedule includes weeks at home and minimal travel.
Instead of flying, he can drive to Bay Hill next week. Because of this, there is no air travel involved. He also gets time with his family, and they can join him at Bay Hill and at THE PLAYERS.
Because he lives in Jupiter, Florida, the Florida swing allows him to stay at home, reduce travel, and drive to nearby venues instead of flying.
These factors allow him to make the five-week run manageable compared to being away from home for the entire period.
To understand the commitment, it helps to break down his five-week schedule.
Shane Lowry is currently in the third week of his five consecutive starts on the PGA Tour, a stretch that runs from mid-February to mid-March.
His run began at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am (February 12–15), where he finished T8. He followed that with a start at The Genesis Invitational (February 19–22), finishing T24.
Now, in Week 3, he is competing at the Cognizant Classic at The Palm Beaches (February 26–March 1). He opened with a 1-under 70 and is T35 as the tournament moves into its second round on February 27, 2026.
From there, his schedule does not slow down. Next week, he heads to the Arnold Palmer Invitational (March 5–8), and the five-week run concludes with THE PLAYERS Championship (March 12–15).
Do you think playing five straight events is a smart move or a risk before THE PLAYERS?
