Storylines for the John Deere Classic: Ben Griffin the man to beat

After a wild week at the Rocket Classic, the PGA Tour heads to Illinois for the John Deere Classic at TPC Deere Run. There aren't any superstars in the field this week, but that doesn't mean there's a shortage of intriguing storylines.

Ben Griffin in unfamiliar territory

At the start of the year, Griffin was just a mediocre PGA Tour player still searching for his first win. Now, he's a two-time winner and the No. 17-ranked player in the world. With the weak field at TPC Deere Run, Griffin has been pegged as the betting favorite (+1600 at FanDuel) to score his third victory of the season.

Griffin has kept the good times rolling since his win at the Charles Schwab Challenge, notching four straight top-15 finishes heading into this week. He's gained strokes from putting, approach play and off the tee in six consecutive starts, so it's hard to find a weakness in his game right now. Griffin will be tough to beat at TPC Deere Run.

Young guns searching for first win

Twenty-year-old Aldrich Potgieter scored his first professional win at last week's Rocket Classic, which could pave the way for a youth movement leading up to the Open Championship. Don't be surprised if another rising star breaks through at TPC Deere Run.

One contender is 23-year-old Michael Thorbjornsen, who's coming off a T4 finish at the Rocket Classic and was runner-up to Davis Thompson at the John Deere Classic last year. Luke Clanton, who recently turned pro coming out of Florida State University, is seeking some form after a missed cut, a T34 and a T60 in his last three starts.

Pierceson Coody, Jackson Koivun and Jackson Suber are some other up-and-comers to watch this week.

Max Homa desperate for a strong performance

Homa wouldn't normally sign up for the John Deere Classic, but he's returning to TPC Deere Run for the first time since 2017 in desperate need of a good week. The former top-10 player in the world has seven missed cuts and just one top-20 finish this season. He currently ranks 122nd in the FedEx Cup standings, putting his PGA Tour card in jeopardy for 2026.

If there was ever a sign of Homa's downfall, he's priced at +10000 to win in a field headlined by Griffin, Denny McCarthy and J.T. Poston. Homa is behind players such as Seamus Power, Rico Hoey, Patrick Rodgers and Eric Cole on the odds board. Is this the week Homa turns his 2025 season around?
