Storylines for the Rocket Classic: Collin Morikawa in need of a spark

The PGA Tour heads to Michigan this week for the Rocket Classic at Detroit Golf Club, a birdie fest that rewards players who can bomb it off the tee and get hot with the putter. Here's what we'll be monitoring closely at Detroit Golf Club.

Collin Morikawa in prime position to snap his slump

Morikawa finished T17 or better in each of his first six starts of the 2025 season, but it's been all downhill from there. The 28-year-old split with his longtime caddie, J.J. Jakovac, in April and has finished T17, T50, T23, T20 and T42 in five starts since.

Morikawa has lost more than 10 strokes from putting over his last two starts. His confidence on the greens is so low that he started experimenting with new putters leading up to the Rocket Classic. If there was ever a good time for Morikawa to break out of his current funk, it's this week.

Morikawa lost in a playoff in his lone career start at Detroit Golf Club in 2023, and he's the betting favorite at +1200 (FanDuel) to win the Rocket Classic with no Scottie Scheffler or Rory McIlroy in the field.

Keegan Bradley looking to keep Ryder Cup momentum rolling

Bradley is preparing to captain Team USA at the Ryder Cup in September, but it's starting to look as if he'll be playing on the team, too. The 39-year-old won the Travelers Championship last week to vault to seventh in the Official World Golf Ranking and ninth in the American Ryder Cup standings. If the team were being finalized today, Bradley would be expected to pick himself

There are still nearly two months until Bradley has to make his captain's picks, so a cold streak could jeopardize his chances. We saw how emotional Bradley was when he didn't make the team in 2023. He wants to be on the course leading the Red, White and Blue to victory, and the Rocket Classic is his next opportunity to solidify his spot on the roster.

Keep your eyes on the young bombers

Don't be surprised if we get a first-time PGA Tour winner this week. Detroit Golf Club is a bomber's paradise due to its short holes, thin rough and wide-open targets off the tee. As long as you can drive it far and have a good week with your wedges and putter, you can succeed here.

That's great news for this new crop of young stars who crush it off the tee but struggle at times with accuracy. Luke Clanton, Rasmus Hojgaard, Michael Thorbjornsen and Aldrich Potgieter are prime candidates to snag the first win of their PGA Tour career this week. Don't be surprised if a few of these names are in contention on Sunday.
