Among all the golfers who left for LIV Golf, Bryson DeChambeau might be the one the PGA Tour feels the absence of most. In recent years, he’s grown into one of the game’s most recognisable figures.
DeChambeau has been a standout since moving over to LIV, becoming just one of two players in the breakaway league to have won a major title – Brooks Koepka being the other.
Despite earning points solely through major championships, DeChambeau still managed to qualify automatically for Team USA at Bethpage. He was praised by teammates for how he carried himself leading up to his return to Ryder Cup action.
Even before leaving in 2022, he was already on his way to becoming a fan favourite. His move didn’t slow down that momentum – if anything, it added more fuel to it.
DeChambeau made a big change at the end of 2019, putting on size and increasing his swing speed. That paid off in a big way when he won the 2020 US Open at Winged Foot by six shots.
He also pulled off one of the boldest shots ever seen on tour at Bay Hill, trying to drive the green on the par-five sixth hole. DeChambeau didn’t reach it, but he carried the ball over 340 yards, drawing cheers from around the course.
He ended up carrying it 347 yards, leaving himself with an approach similar to what you’d expect after a stray tee shot on a short par four. Paul Azinger pointed out that with an even more aggressive line, he could have reached the green.
Spieth was so caught up in it that he stopped between holes just to watch DeChambeau’s shot.
Curry explained: “I was with Spieth last week and he was in the group ahead of you. He was playing by himself I think ahead of you. He was talking about just making golf fun and the fact that you tried that.”
DeChambeau ended up finishing one shot ahead of Lee Westwood, securing his eighth PGA Tour win in the process.
That drive was a perfect example of why fans find him so entertaining. After the round, he spoke about how much he enjoyed giving the crowd something to talk about.
“Oh, man, I felt like a kid again, for sure. It was exciting. Especially when you pull it off and you know, it was almost like winning a tournament. I don’t know. It’s kind of the feeling I had, it was like, Oh, I did it. I got the same chills and feeling when I saw it clear and there was no splash, it was like, Yes. I gave the fans what they wanted,” he said.
There’s no denying that Bryson DeChambeau has a knack for taking centre stage whenever he gets the chance.
