The Curious Case of Scheffler vs. the Ravioli
Michael Madrid-USA TODAY Sports

I may have been reading too many mystery novels, but the

Scottie Scheffler's story is both curious and oddly cryptic.

There is nothing odd about what what the current world no. 1 has done inside the ropes; there is not much mystery there; he’s just been kicking ass and taking names.

Not often you hear Tiger Woods's name used in comparing a player’s season, but with the eight wins in 2024, which includes the gold medal at the Paris Olympics, it’s hard not to make the connection to whom many people call the GOAT.

After winning the Hero World Challenge in December, his ninth victory, Scheffler’s right palm found a shattered glass during the holidays, which required surgery. According to a statement by Scheffler's manager, Blake Smith, “The recovery time should be three to four weeks.”

Smith’s statement was made on December 27th, and the four-week window would close at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am next week.

In a video interview on Monday at the Arnold Palmer Invitational media day, Scheffler said his plans were still unclear regarding when he would return.

“I think as far as schedule and stuff goes, I'm sure we'll announce whether or not I'm playing the next few days, maybe a week or so,” Scheffler said. “Still, like I said, I just want to make sure I'm getting back to normal and progressing the right way in recovery.”

Scheffler said he was anxious to return but would not just rush back.

If you don’t have the PGA Tour schedule in front of you, let me point out that AT&T is next week, and you must commit by Friday.

Is it not curious that Scheffler talked about providing notice of his commitment to the event, which will either be in the next few days or a week or so?

It’s undoubtedly possible that Scheffler could commit on Friday and then WD during the tournament week if he feels he can’t go, but his response is still curious.

The other odd part of this situation is that Scheffler was making homemade ravioli, which caused him to injure the palm of his right hand.

That was the extent of explaining the tussle between Scheffler and the ravioli.

I was always curious about the injury back when first announced, not that I questioned he injured himself, but he broke a glass so violently that glass shards wedged in his hand, and he needed surgery to repair the injury.

The last odd thread to this story comes from Scheffler when asked about his rehab.

“I'm not really going to go into a whole bunch of detail about recovery and all that if you don't mind,” Scheffler said when asked about the rehab process.

What the two-time Masters champion said was that he felt good and that the rehab had gone well.

Am I reading too much into this? Some questions remain unanswered before concluding the story on the fight between Scheffler and the ravioli.
