As one of the greatest players in the sport’s history, Jack Nicklaus is undoubtedly an authority on golf.

Tiger Woods once called him the greatest of all time, and it is hard to argue.

Nicklaus still holds the record with 18 major championships, three more than Tiger, and has 73 PGA Tour victories to his name.

‘The Golden Bear’ has not lost his passion for the sport, either. He remains a respected voice in golf circles and is known as much for his influence outside of playing as he is for what he accomplished on the course.

Over the years, Nicklaus has shared his views on many players, including Tom Weiskopf.

And Mountain Outlaw reported his comments regarding his former rival, when he said: “Tom was one of the finest strikers of the golf ball to ever live, and if he ever believed that he was half as good as he was, he would have won a lot more tournaments.

“Tom had this hang-up that he couldn’t beat me, and he shouldn’t have had that. Because Tom was a terrific player, and certainly a lot better player than he gave himself credit for.”

While there may not be an extensive list of major titles to Weiskopf’s name, Nicklaus clearly held him in high regard throughout his career.

Tom Weiskopf’s career highlights, including his Open Championship victory

Weiskopf’s name carries weight in the sport too, having put together a career that included 16 PGA Tour victories.

Among those was his win at The Open Championship in 1973, where he finished three shots clear of Neil Coles and Johnny Miller at Troon Golf Club.

Nicklaus played a significant role in Weiskopf not having more titles to his name. Weiskopf ended up second to him twice in major tournaments.

Both of those came at the Masters, where Weiskopf finished runner-up four times across his career, a tough record for any player to carry.

The two also met with similar results again during the 1993 US Senior Open, with Nicklaus once more coming out on top.
