Austin Smotherman came to the Players Championship with two big things on his mind. Golf and becoming a father.
Most players at TPC Sawgrass this week are thinking only about the tournament, but Smotherman has something else to think about, too. His wife is expecting their baby on March 23, and he is currently tied for the lead at five under par at one of golf’s biggest events.
“My wife’s given me the okay to play this week,” Smotherman said on March 13, 2026. “Just keep rolling, no matter if I was shooting five under or five over, I guess.”

The plan? Keep playing golf and figure out the baby part later. (third child)

When he left home for the Florida Swing a couple of weeks ago, the plan was simple: to play good golf. He has a shot to go for a tournament that is seen to be on par with majors.
Now, with the weekend ahead and fatherhood just days away, Smotherman is trying to manage both moments at the same time, with plenty of pressure on his shoulders. His wife is not being induced, and their first two children were both born late. One was a week late, and the other was two weeks late, so Smotherman thinks this baby might also arrive late.
The due date is March 23, the same day the Houston Open begins, and he plans to finish the tournament, fly back to Houston, and drive to Dallas if the baby comes.
When he spoke, he still had eight and a half holes left in his round, and the plan had not changed.
“The plan is to stay,” Smotherman said. “Just keep playing golf.”
The Players Championship weekend is only the beginning, and he has confirmed his plans to tee it up at the Valspar Championship the following week, which is two full tournaments sitting between now and his wife’s March 23 due date.
