Tiger Woods' backup putter from 2002 sells for $393K at auction

Tiger Woods' 2002 Scotty Cameron backup putter sold for a record $393,300 at Golden Age Golf Auctions on Sunday, according to ESPN's Tom VanHaaren. It is believed to be the most expensive golf club ever sold.

Scotty Cameron made backup putters for Woods to practice with and produced only one or two backups each year they worked together. This particular putter, a Newport II 2002 model, was never used in tournament play.

Golden Age Golf Auctions also sold a 2001 Newport II in September 2020 for $155,000, according to VanHaaren.

Woods has not competed in a golf tournament since the 2020 Masters at Augusta National. The 45-year-old was in a serious rollover car accident in February 2021 and had leg surgery after sustaining several injuries.

After the accident, a doctor and injury analyst for FOX Sports said Woods' recovery timeline was between eight and 12 months. However, it's unclear if he'll ever return.

According to People, Woods is "doing well" but hasn't been able to play any golf as he remains on crutches.
