Butch Harmon has heaped praise on Scottie Scheffler while also making an interesting comment involving Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods.
Right now, Scheffler is the clear leader in the sport – a spot both Nicklaus and Woods know well from their own careers.
The top-ranked player in the world has often been compared to Woods during his prime, but Harmon recently brought up Nicklaus in a new light.
Many still consider the Golden Bear to be the best golfer of all time, even ahead of Tiger.
Harmon saw plenty of Nicklaus during his peak years and spent over a decade working closely with Woods, coaching him from 1993 until 2004. Few people are better positioned to offer an informed comparison between Scheffler and the two legends of the game.
Speaking to SiriusXM PGA TOUR Radio after Scheffler’s Open Championship win, Harmon was full of praise for the 29-year-old.
The renowned coach had an interesting perspective on how Scheffler stacks up against Nicklaus and Woods.
"He's the closest thing to Jack Nicklaus I've ever seen mentally."

With so much discussion on the Scottie Scheffler-Tiger Woods comparison, Butch Harmon takes it a different direction w/ Colt & Drew on Gravy & The Sleeze.@ColtKnost | @thesleezyman

He said: “In all the comparisons and stuff, the Tiger this and that. I think his greatest attribute he has is that he’s the closest thing I have seen to Jack Nicklaus mentally. He makes no mental mistakes. He dumps the ball in the middle of the green when he has to, his iron control is beautiful.”
“He reminds me more of Jack than he does Tiger. Tiger in winning ways but Jack in the way he plays golf. I have never quite seen a guy who can mimic Nicklaus in the way that he does.
“Can you imagine if everybody, all the great players we talk about, had Scottie Scheffler’s head, how much better they’d be?“
Scheffler currently has four major wins at just 29 years old. If we were to speculate about how many majors he could win before retiring from professional golf, a number between 12 and 15 seems realistic based on what we have seen so far.
While Nicklaus and Woods have established legacies, the current world No. 1 is still building his career, but he already has some impressive stats.
Here’s how their achievements compare:
Results | Nicklaus | Woods | Scheffler |
Majors played | 164 | 95 | 25 |
Wins | 18 | 15 | 4 |
Runner-ups | 19 | 7 | 2 |
Top-5s | 56 | 33 | 9 |
Top-10s | 73 | 41 | 16 |
Top-25s | 95 | 59 | 20 |
Cuts made % | 80% | 82% | 88% |
The most telling compliment for Scheffler might be that his early numbers don’t look out of place next to two of the game’s all-time greats.
If he maintains his current form, there’s every chance he could get close to matching the major tallies of Woods and Nicklaus before he’s done.
