Key Points

  • Tiger Woods hasn’t competed on the PGA Tour since July 2024.
  • He ruptured his Achilles tendon just before the 2025 Masters Tournament in March.
  • Despite the setbacks, Woods remains one of the greatest athletes in professional sports history, boasting 82 PGA Tour victories.

It has been quite the journey for legendary golfer Tiger Woods in 2025, as he has focused on regaining his health to compete again on the PGA Tour after suffering a ruptured Achilles at the end of March—just weeks before the Masters Tournament, which he had planned to play.

Now, Woods has faced another setback. On Saturday, he made a major personal announcement, revealing that he underwent another back surgery.

“After experiencing pain and lack of mobility in my back, I consulted with doctors and surgeons to have tests taken," Woods said. "The scans determined that I had a collapsed disc in L4/5, disc fragments, and a compromised spinal canal. I opted to have my disc replaced yesterday, and I already know I made a good decision for my health and my back.

On Friday, Tiger underwent lumbar disc replacement surgery in my L4/5 lumbar spine for lower back symptoms," the post added. "The surgery was deemed successful and was performed by Dr. Sheeraz Qureshi and his team at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York.”

Golf fan reacted to the news:

"What is going on with this guy? Why so many injuries? He's not even playing golf anymore. Crazy. At this point, I hope he's healthy enough to be able to walk when he's 60," a fan said.

Someone else added, "Greatness usually requires pain eventually. Look at the torque his swing put on his back when he was younger and you will understand all the back issues.

"he pursuit of true greatness never comes without a cost. Tiger, you are dealing with yours. Your work ethic and desire to be great is leaving you with these ailments. Was it worth it?! To be remembered forever? We love you! Keep your head up, Champ," another person wrote.

One more fan commented, "Heal up GOAT! Take your time. Do it for your life - you have nothing to prove on a course."

The timeline for Woods’ back recovery has not been made public. He still has several more months of rehabilitation for his Achilles, meaning both injuries will likely overlap as he works to return to the course. It remains uncertain when he will feel close to his normal self—or even a shadow of it—again.

Woods has already cemented his legacy in the sports world, and few athletes have endured the injuries he has throughout his career.

Dating back to 1994, Woods has battled knee issues, multiple Achilles injuries, several back problems, and numerous other injuries from both on- and off-course incidents. Now, he has added yet another challenge to that long and grueling list.
