Tyrrell Hatton could not live up to expectations on Sunday, ultimately falling short of Scottie Scheffler at The Open.
Hatton finished a full 10 strokes behind the American, even though he looked as though he might push him during the third round at Royal Portrush.
The 33-year-old has been a consistent performer, but there are still doubts about whether he can break through and win a major.
At this year’s Open, his approach shots just weren’t accurate enough, which ended up costing him.
Hatton has admitted to getting frustrated during the tournament, and maybe it’s time to take a page out of Scheffler’s book.
Tyrrell Hatton has always been direct with his words.
He doesn’t shy away from tough topics and often finds himself at the centre of debate, sometimes from questions that don’t seem loaded at first glance.
After Scottie Scheffler’s dominant win at The Open, Hatton was asked if it’s becoming tough to keep pace with the world number one.
“I wouldn’t say winning by four is lapping the field. He’s obviously played amazing golf this week. He’s been amazing for the last number of years. So it’s not a surprise for anyone to see the standard that he’s setting. He’s been No. 1 for just over two years solid now, is it? Yeah, he’s a very special player.”
Scheffler took charge of The Open from Friday and never looked back.
Hatton had an opportunity to make a run at him on Saturday, but ultimately fell short.
Here’s how their numbers stack up from the week:
Stats | Scheffler’s rank | Hatton’s rank |
Strokes gained off the tee | 48th | 31st |
Strokes gained approach | 1st | 4th |
Strokes gained around the greens | 125th | 94th |
Strokes gained putting | 2nd | 77th |
Strokes gained total | 1st | 17th |
The stats above highlight just how much better Scheffler was compared to Hatton at The Open.
For Hatton, the next step will be figuring out how to close that gap and challenge more consistently.
