Watch: Jordan Spieth's tee shot ricochets off fan, saves him from likely Players Championship cut

Three-time major victor Jordan Spieth has one unlucky fan to thank for likely saving him from failing to make the cut at the 2023 Players Championship.

Teeing off on the 18th hole on day two of the tournament, Spieth was two-over par and in danger of not playing past Friday's action. When his tee shot was slicing right and headed well out of play, it looked like Spieth was destined to have his day end in embarrassment.

When the ball knocked off the fan's knee and ricocheted into the fairway, it put the 29-year-old in great shape to recover and perhaps salvage a par, possibly even secure a birdie to put him right at the one-over projected cut line. When Spieth ended his day with the chip-in for eagle, he all but assured that he'd be playing this weekend.

After a solid three-under 69 on Thursday at TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, the 2015 Masters and U.S. Open champion had a rough Friday with a three-over 75 but saved his best (and most entertaining) shots for last. Spieth now will look to carry over his momentum into the weekend and earn his 14th career PGA Tour victory.

Spieth's last victory on the PGA Tour came nearly one year ago at the RBC Heritage in April 2022.
