The Northern Irishman addressed the future of players like Bryson DeChambeau and Brooks Koepka as golf continues to seek unity.
The professional golf world remains in a holding pattern following Brooks Koepka’s departure from LIV Golf in December, with widespread speculation surrounding whether the five-time major champion will be allowed to rejoin the PGA Tour.
Koepka still has one year remaining on the five-year suspension issued in 2022, which could require him to compete on the DP World Tour before becoming eligible for full reinstatement. Alternatively, the PGA Tour could choose to lift the ban altogether, a move that would almost certainly provoke strong reactions from players who rejected lucrative LIV offers in order to stay loyal to the established circuit.
Speaking on the Stick to Football podcast, McIlroy was asked whether he believes golf is moving toward reunification. He suggested that LIV’s long-term future remains uncertain, noting that despite the enormous investment, the league has struggled to capture widespread interest.
When host Gary Neville questioned whether LIV players should be welcomed back without penalty, McIlroy delivered a notably pragmatic response. He acknowledged that those who left for LIV had already paid a price in terms of reputation and professional standing, regardless of the financial rewards they received.
“If bringing Bryson DeChambeau back — and others — would ultimately strengthen the tour, I would be comfortable with that,” McIlroy said. “But it’s not my decision alone. It would have to be determined collectively by the PGA Tour membership.”
While many top stars appear supportive of reunification, the players most affected could be those battling to preserve their tour status. With the number of fully exempt PGA Tour cards recently reduced from 125 to 100, competition for places has never been more intense.
Many of these golfers have spent years working their way through the DP World Tour, Korn Ferry Tour, and Q-School just to earn their position. A sudden influx of returning LIV players would make that fight even more unforgiving, raising serious concerns about fairness for those still clinging to their playing rights.
Although McIlroy’s comments suggest little resistance from the established stars, the ultimate response from players on the margins — whose careers could be directly impacted — remains one of the key unanswered questions.
