Why Tiger Woods joining the PGA Tour policy board is significant

There may not be a better time for Tiger Woods to emerge and give his two cents. And his presence may be more significant than many fans realize.

The 15-time major champion was back in the news on Tuesday when it was announced he is now a player director on the PGA Tour policy board. The move, which was voted on by his peers, will put him in a position of power when it comes to making big decisions, including those regarding the proposed merger with LIV Golf's Saudi Arabian backers.

But the big takeaway isn't so much that Woods himself has joined the board. It's that the board now has six player directors -- up from four last year, according to the Associated Press -- which gives players the majority vote in matters going forward.

"When I was on the board in '17, '18, '19, we kind of trusted the independent directors with the important business decisions and they trusted us with the important golf decisions, and it was a nice symbiotic relationship," PGA veteran and long-time Policy Advisory Council member Kevin Streelman said in a video posted to the X platform, formerly known as Twitter.

"But clearly now there have been some unique circumstances, I would say."

Woods has kept a low profile since his season was cut short due to needing ankle surgery. But the golf world has been extra anxious to hear from him ever since it was announced in June that commissioner Jay Monahan held secret talks with the Saudi's Public Investment Fund about merging.

Revelations from those private talks have created a major rift between Monahan and the players -- and what better way to get Woods involved than to make him a player director?

"We gotta keep him busy somehow, he can’t just sit on the couch and do nothing," PGA player and close friend Justin Thomas said in the same video post to the X platform. "I don’t think there’s anyone else I would want speaking on my behalf & the rest of the guys."

Woods joins fellow player directors Patrick Cantlay, Webb Simpson, Charley Hoffman, Peter Malnati and, of course, Rory McIlroy.

The proposed agreement for the PGA Tour and Saudi PIF expires on December 31, 2023, so you can bet Woods will be plenty busy being a megaphone for PGA Tour players in the coming months.
