In some surprising news ahead of the 2024 CJ Cup Byron Nelson, hometown favorite Will Zalatoris has officially withdrawn from the tournament, prioritizing his health over playing in this week's competition.
The Plano native, who was expected to be a top draw for the event at TPC Craig Ranch in McKinney, cited precautionary reasons related to his back for the withdrawal. This development follows the earlier announcement that Masters champion Scottie Scheffler would also miss the tournament while awaiting the birth of his first child.
Zalatoris, who recently underwent a microdiscectomy surgery after withdrawing from the 2023 Masters, has been keen on taking care of his health, especially with a packed schedule ahead that includes three major tournaments. Despite this week's withdrawal, Zalatoris hinted at a proactive approach to managing his back health post-surgery. He reportedly told a PGA Tour official that he could've played this week but was taking advantage of being home to get treatment.
This departure marks yet another significant loss for the CJ Cup Byron Nelson, leaving only three top 30 players in the field this weekend. Zalatoris, ranked No. 30 in the Official World Golf Ranking, has three top-10 finishes this season, including a T-2 at the Genesis Championship and a T-9 at the Masters.
Nick Watney will replace Zalatoris in the field.
