Xander Schauffele has shared some firm advice with amateur golfers about the ideal setup of their bags.

Schauffele is recognised as one of the standout players on the PGA Tour and holds a strong reputation globally.

The Californian picked up two majors in 2024, but injuries early the following season left him struggling to get back to his top form.

This year, Schauffele has spoken about falling into a habit of overthinking his shots. The dip in form was clear enough that he missed out on qualifying for the FedEx Cup finale at East Lake.

Even with these setbacks, Schauffele remains among the elite in golf and there’s little doubt he’ll return strong next season. So when he shares advice with amateur players, it’s probably worth taking note.

Xander Schauffele explains why this club should never be in an amateur’s bag

Known for his ball-striking ability, even Schauffele has replaced the longest iron in his bag with an extra fairway wood. And now, he’s encouraging amateurs to follow suit.

The world number three was recently asked which club he thinks amateurs should avoid using. “Oh, a three-iron. It shouldn’t be in the bag. A lot of pros don’t even use a three-iron,” Schauffele replied.

“You need speed to get it up in the air, there are hybrids and utility woods and seven-woods out there that are way easier to hit. Three-iron you can’t hit out of the rough, seven-wood you can or hybrid you can.”

Why hitting a seven-wood is easier than using a three-iron

Seven-woods are often easier to launch than long irons because of their lower centre of gravity, which helps get the ball up faster.

Long iron shots require plenty of speed to get airborne, something the pros manage easily but most amateurs struggle with.

Another advantage of a utility club is how much more consistent it is on off-centre hits compared to a traditional long iron.

And if Xander Schauffele is recommending another fairway wood in place of a three-iron, it’s probably worth listening.

If certain clubs can make golf more manageable for casual players, there’s no reason not to take advantage of them.
