Xander Schauffele reveals what he expects from Bryson DeChambeau on every Ryder Cup hole

Bryson DeChambeau brings a bit of unpredictability to the 2025 Ryder Cup, as the LIV Golf star returns to Team USA for the first time in four years at Bethpage Black.

DeChambeau has not played for Team USA since the 2021 Ryder Cup. He switched to LIV Golf the following year, but his recent form has put him back in contention.

His rise over the past few seasons has seen him earn an automatic spot on Keegan Bradley’s team. Bradley even confirmed his selection during The Open Championship in July.

What sets DeChambeau apart is more than just distance off the tee. He brings an energy and presence that could be a real asset for Team USA at Bethpage Black.

DeChambeau has not always been the most popular figure among his peers. Brandel Chamblee has suggested that some PGA Tour players do not buy into his personality changes, viewing them as more of a performance than anything genuine.

But one player who is fully supportive of the California native being himself at Bethpage is Xander Schauffele.

The two were teammates back in 2021 at Whistling Straits, and on the Fore Play Podcast, Schauffele talked about how he had already spoken with the Crushers captain about what he expects if they end up paired together again.

“[Patrick Cantlay‘s straight talking] clicked with me. I grew up with my dad, he’ll say some things off the cuff and I’m just straight. Just say it. I’m not going to take offence to it. I might, but I’ll let you know if it offends me.

“If I’m playing with Bryson next week, I was already telling Bryson I want to see him walking down every fairway with his putter up as if he drove the green. I loved that at Whistling Straits, that’s the energy we need. If I’m playing with that, and he tells me this is what’s happening, more power to you,” Schauffele explained.

How Bryson DeChambeau is setting the tone ahead of his third Ryder Cup appearance

DeChambeau heads into the 2025 Ryder Cup with plenty to prove, and he is expected to play a major role in shaping the atmosphere at Bethpage Black.

If Team Europe manage to get the better of him early on, it would send a strong message from Luke Donald’s squad. But getting past DeChambeau is no easy task.

Ryder Cup Points won Overall record
2018 0 0-3-0
2021 2.5 2-0-1
Total 2.5 2-3-1

He had a rough start in 2018, losing his singles match against Alex Noren. Still, being paired with an exhausted Tiger Woods and an out-of-form Phil Mickelson did not help matters.

Woods was coming off an emotional win at the Tour Championship, while Jim Furyk’s decision to play Mickelson in alternate shot raised eyebrows.

DeChambeau performed much better at Whistling Straits in 2021. He went unbeaten alongside Scottie Scheffler, who was just starting to make his mark back then. DeChambeau also hit one of the most memorable drives of the event, launching it over 400 yards.

If he can deliver three or more points for Team USA this time around, it will be tough for Europe to hold onto the trophy as it heads back across the Atlantic.
