USA gymnastics star Simone Biles: Mind and body were not in sync at Tokyo Olympics

In an Instagram post Friday morning, Simone Biles said that her "mind and body are simply not in sync" while going more in-depth about the issue that plagued her during this summer's Tokyo Olympics.

Biles withdrew from Thursday's individual all-around competition to focus on her mental health. The decision came after she also withdrew from the team final earlier in the week.

The 24-year-old had an uncharacteristic performance on vault in the team final, bailing in the middle of her Amanar attempt, doing just 1.5 twists rather than 2.5. She appeared to get lost in the air, a phenomenon she called "the twisties," which can cause gymnasts serious injuries.

"I also have no idea how I landed on my feet on that vault because if you look at the pictures and my eyes you can see how confused I am as to where I am in the air," Biles wrote on her Instagram story. "Thankfully I landed safe enough but I also don't think some of you realize I was supposed to do a 2½ and I only completed 1½ twists before it looks like I got shot out of the air."

Biles added that her issues began after she left the United States and arrived in Tokyo for the preliminary competition.

In a final post, she said she didn't quit because of a bad performance, which is something many people are accusing her of doing.

"I've had plenty of bad performances throughout my career and finished the competition," she said. "I simply got so lost my safety was at risk as well as a team medal."

With Biles cheering on the sideline, the U.S. women's gymnastics team won silver, while the athletes from Russia (ROC) won gold.
