Simone Biles to return to competition for first time since 2020 Summer Olympics

Simone Biles, a four-time Olympic gold medalist gymnast, will return to competition in August for the first time since the 2020 Summer Olympics.

Biles also has 25 Gymnastics World Champions medals — including 19 golds — making her the most decorated gymnast of all time.

She was expected to add to her Olympic gold medal count at the 2020 Olympics, pushed back to 2021 due to the pandemic, but bowed out of several competitions, citing her mental health and struggles with "the twisties," which the Associated Press describes as "a gymnastics term for when an athlete loses their spatial awareness when airborne."

Her return at the U.S. Classic on Aug. 5 comes a year before the 2024 Summer Olympics, paving the way for Biles to make a trip to Paris next year to add to her illustrious career.

Outside of the gym, Biles has been just as impactful. In September 2021, she was honored by Time Magazine in its annual "Time 100" list of the most influential people in the world. The publication praised her for her openness in regard to her mental health battles at the Olympics.

In June 2022, President Joe Biden awarded Biles the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

She was also one of several women to come forward to help put an end to convicted sexual abuser Larry Nassar's crimes and admonished officials for enabling him for so many years.

"To be clear, I blame Larry Nassar — and I also blame an entire system that perpetrated his abuse," she told the Senate Judiciary Committee in September 2021.

As the AP notes, Biles took off a year in 2017 after winning big at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro and made a successful return at the U.S. Classic in 2018, winning the all-around title that year.
