Now that the full roster for the 2023-24 All-Value Sire Team has been selected, let's take a closer look at each member, continuing on with Second Team Rookie Pappacap at Walmac Farm.
As the Second Team Rookie, Pappacap represents bloodstock editor Joe Nevills' runner-up choice among first-year stallions standing for $20,000 or less during the 2024 breeding season, based on pedigree, physical, on-track performance, and projected support by breeders and his farm.
There are few sire lines with more momentum right now than that of record-setter Gun Runner, and Pappacap is the only son of the champion standing for less than $20,000 this season.
However, the price point is not the only thing that makes Pappacap a viable option for breeders looking to replicate the Gun Runner magic.
He played a key part in Gun Runner's record-setting freshman season, winning a Grade 2 race and finishing second in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile. He also showed plenty of variety with his on-track efforts, earning graded black type as a sprinter, a miler, and a router.
"Pappacap is a well-balanced individual who I expect will develop quite a bit after his first year at stud," Nevills wrote in his analysis. "He cuts an athletic frame, much like his sire Gun Runner, and both measure at 16.1 hands, though I wouldn't classify either as particularly leggy. Pappacap's silhouette is remarkably faithful to his sire's, and with a decent sample size of what works with Gun Runner, that could inform shrewd breeders on what kind of mares might best populate the rookie's book."
