A lifetime’s involvement in Thoroughbred racing has given Jeffrey Bloom up close and personal savvy about what makes a good horse. He’s been part of the racing industry his entire adult life, and it all started with a day at the track when he was a kid.

“My oldest brother took me to Del Mar when I was 11. We walked through the gates and went straight to the paddock. When I saw those majestic Thoroughbreds walking around the ring and the jockeys in their silks, I knew right then that’s what I wanted to do,” recalls Jeffrey.

The Southern California native learned to ride at San Luis Rey Downs Training Center. Fittingly, he rode his first race at age 18 at Del Mar, the track where his dream started.

As a jockey, Jeffrey rode professionally for nine years. Even after he quit riding races, he stayed in the saddle as a main workout rider for such top trainers as Hall of Famer Charlie Whittingham.

“I got to work out numerous graded stakes winners,” says Jeffrey, adding, “No question, the most impressive horse I’ve ever been on was Sunday Silence.”

Jeffrey went on to earn his Bachelor of Science degree in Financial Services from San Diego State University.

“When I was done riding, I got a ‘real’ job in the tech industry in business development, but also did TV and radio during that time to keep involved in the racing industry,” he says.

“I really missed being in racing full time, so I came back into it to start up a brand-new West Coast operation for West Point Thoroughbreds in 2005,” says Jeffrey, who worked as Vice President of Western Operations for West Point Thoroughbreds.

In 2011, he founded Bloom Racing Stable, LLC, (www.bloomracing.com), which keeps him busy with bloodstock services, pinhooking, portfolio management and consulting with clients in both sales and breeding.

Jeffrey’s passion for racing extends beyond the horses’ careers at the track, which is why he serves on the board of the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance (TAA).

After many years in SoCal, in 2020, he moved to Arlington, Texas, putting him conveniently in the middle of the country, which makes it easier to travel with his work.

Through Bloom Racing, Jeffrey has selected and managed the careers of numerous graded stakes winners, among them the great mare, Midnight Bisou. In a spectacular career, the multiple grade one stakes winner of $7,471,520 was on the board in 22 of 23 starts, including 13 wins. She won the 2019 Eclipse Award for Champion Older Dirt Female.

Jeffrey notes that of all the horses he’s had the opportunity to swing a leg over, Midnight Bisou remains his favorite.

“She’s pure class,” he says simply.

The Midnight Bisou connection continues as Bloom Racing now owns 25 percent of Verifying, the graded stakes winner just beginning his breeding career at Pleasant Acres Stallions in Florida this season. The 4-year-old son of Triple Crown champion Justify is out of Dive Delite, making him a half-brother to Midnight Bisou.

“We followed his career very closely and I got to see him run in person. He was such an impressive early horse. Any time you have a horse win his first out at Saratoga, that’s one of the toughest things to do in our sport. A horse that can show the kind of talent and versatility to win sprinting and going two turns at the graded stakes level is always a good thing,” says Jeffrey.

Winner of the 2023 Grade 3 Indiana Derby, Verifying also placed in three Grade 1 races as he earned $852,706 in a 11-3-4-0 career.

“We’d been big fans of the horse—both his physical presence and his resume on the racetrack. The fact that he’s a brother to our champion Midnight Bisou was really icing on the cake,” adds Jeffrey.“He’s from an exceptional family with one of the hottest stallions in the market and it goes without saying the mare’s side is as strong as it gets. He really checked off all the boxes.

"When the opportunity came up, we jumped right on it. It was a no-brainer,” he continued, noting that Bloom Racing bought in after Verifying’s race career ended. “We’re very committed to Verifying’s success as a stallion and are absolutely going to support him. We’ve already sent one mare to him and will most likely send an additional six to eight mares this season.

“We’re thrilled to be involved with the folks at Pleasant Acres. We couldn’t be more excited about what the future holds for Verifying and his progeny in the not-too-distant future,” Jeffrey said.

Verifying (Justify – Diva Delite, by Repent) stands at Pleasant Acres Stallions in 2024 for $10,000 live foal.
