Three Thoroughbreds were killed on Monday when a tractor trailer carrying them wrecked near mile marker 25 on the Blue Grass Parkway, about an hour West of Lexington, Ky., according to a post from the Bardstown Fire Department.
The Fire Department's report indicates that the trailer was on an embankment when crews arrived, and that the trailer "became dislodged from the king pin and ripped the cab of the truck from the frame."
The driver was able to be extricated and flown to University of Louisville Hospital.
Anderson County Large Animal Rescue assisted in the removal of the Thoroughbreds from the trailer, which took approximately four hours. Three perished, an estimated loss of $450,000, but four were able to be saved and transported by equine ambulance to local hospitals.
The social media post concludes: "It took a collaborative effort between multiple agencies to make this a successful incident. Thank you to the following responding agencies that assisted: Nelson County Fire and Rescue, Nelson County EMS, Nelson County Dispatch, Bardstown Police, Anderson County Fire and Rescue, Jessamine County Fire Department, Nicholasville Fire Department, Nelson County Sheriff’s Office, and Veterinarians from Rood & Riddle and Hagyard."
