At first glance, it might be puzzling why Ed Carpenter Racing decided to extend the contract of driver Christian Rasmussen through 2027 and beyond.
Rasmussen is 24th of 25 full-time drivers in the 2026 NTT IndyCar Series standings. He's yet to finish in the top 10 this season.
But the Copenhagen, Denmark, native is arguably one of the best oval racers in all of IndyCar.
Rasmussen doesn't have an average finish better than 10th at any street circuit or road course in the IndyCar schedule. He's yet to even lead a lap in a road or street course race.
But on ovals, the third-year driver is excellent. Rasmussen scored his lone IndyCar victory at the Milwaukee Mile in 2025, led 69 laps in a stellar showing at Phoenix on March 7 and finished third at Gateway in his only start at the Illinois track.
Ironically, it's Gateway where the circuit travels this weekend for Sunday's Bommarito Automotive Group 500. For Rasmussen and the No. 21 team, a strong performance wouldn't only be a desperately needed shot in the arm, but also a reassurance that ECR made the right decision to retain their young driver.
Ovals are clearly Rasmussen's strength, and while he still has a ways to go to be competitive on road and street venues, an annual win at an oval would go a long way towards ensuring he has a long-term IndyCar future.
