10 beautifully scenic walks in Sydney

I grew up with an aunt who lived just outside of Sydney, Australia, so I’m familiar with the fantastic city with which I share a name. I even attended the University of Sydney and lived in Newtown as an exchange student. Sydney is known as an urban playground, which isn’t usually my thing. But it also has easy access to lovely nature walks. Here are 10 amazing options.

Bondi to Coogee Walk

If there’s one coastal walk you’ve heard of in Australia, it’s likely the path between Bondi and Coogee beaches. One of the most iconic activities in the city, it’s a must-do on any visit! The just over 3.5-mile cliff-top trail will take you through the beautiful beaches of Sydney’s eastern suburbs. You’ll pass through Tamarama, Bronte, and Clovelly, before an iced coffee reward at either end. Additionally, if you go in late October or early November, you can enjoy the “Sculptures by the Sea” festival along the way!

North Head

The end of the continent is home to a great hike with panoramic views of the area. The six-mile trek is a loop that starts and ends at the Manly ferry terminal, making it a very convenient walk. You’ll enjoy varied terrain in the bush, along the ocean, and through the North Head Sanctuary. Highlights include Shelley Beach, North Fort, and Third Quarantine Cemetery.

Spit Bridge to Manly

Be prepared to dedicate your entire day to this one. At just over six miles, you could complete it in a few hours, but you will stop numerous times to enjoy hidden beaches and stunning views. Take the bus or park your car at the Spit Bridge and follow the path through nature reserves, lighthouses, and city suburbs. Also, note that the distance above is one-way, so double it if you walk back to the bridge. Alternatively, buses frequently run from Manly.

Flat Rock Beach Path

This is technically another Manly walk, but it begins in Killarney Heights, a suburb just outside of Manly center. Perfect if you’ve tackled others and want to try something new. From the Roseville Bridge, follow the short 1.5-mile Flat Rock Walking Path to Flat Rock Beach, where you’ll be rewarded with sandy shores and a waterfall!

Taronga Zoo

The area of Mosman holds a special place in my heart and is home to many of my favorite Sydney paths. A popular one begins from Taronga Zoo (accessible by ferry or bus) and follows the water for four miles to Balmoral Beach. You’ll visit Sydney icons like Bradleys Head, Chowder Bay, and the Clifton Gardens Reserve along the way.

Across the Bridge from the North Shore to the Rocks

This route is definitely the most urban (and shortest) option, but as Sydney is a waterfront city, don't worry about a lack of views. The North Shore of Sydney lies just across the quay from downtown and Circular Quay. Take the ferry, train, or bus to either Kirribilli or Milsons Point, right by the Sydney Harbour Bridge. Then, take the pedestrian walkway on the bridge, cross the water, and head right into the historic Rocks neighborhood. It’s short enough to explore the city and walk back across the bridge without becoming too tired.

This amazing eight-mile hike is a bit outside the city, located in Botany Bay National Park. Start south of Kurnell and walk along cliffs above the ocean and down to various beaches and marinas before ending in Cronulla, where you can cool off in the ocean pools.

Bradley Head to Chowder Bay

Another North Shore favorite, this is actually a variation of the Taronga Zoo walk. You’ll begin at the same place — the zoo (reachable by ferry, bus, or car) — and through the bush to Chowder Bay. You can then relax with a coffee or glass of wine before turning around for the second half of the four-mile (round-trip) walk.

In the eastern suburb of Watsons Bay is a lovely little path (just under two miles) perfect for a daytime stroll. Take the ferry to Watsons Bay and follow the neighborhood’s roads past seaside mansions and apartments. Eventually, you’ll reach the beach at Camp Cove, where you’ll find an old cobblestone road up to the lighthouse.

This short just-over-a-mile coastal walk is located in Sydney Harbour National Park and packs in numerous views. Gaze upon Shark Island, the Harbour Bridge, and many beaches. You can also stroll the historic Strickland House grounds along the way.
