If your skin changes with the weather, make these adjustments to your skincare routine. Your face will thank you.

Add exfoliation

As winter leaves and spring approaches, there are multiple reasons to add an exfoliation step to your skincare routine. Your skin might change a bit as the weather does, and you’ll probably be spending more time outside, both of which lead to more dead skin and debris on your face. Exfoliate to take care of those issues, just do so sparingly.

Hydrate

Hydration is always important, but it’s especially important when your skin is adjusting to warmer weather. Be sure to drink plenty of water, and consider using a more hydrating moisturizer.

Change your moisturizer

Speaking of moisturizers, spring is also the time to ditch your heavy night cream, which is meant for the coldest and driest weather. Opt for something lighter, such as a gel-based moisturizer.

Add SPF

Thanks to technology, our faces are exposed to harmful light almost constantly, so you should be using SPF anyway. If you’re not, use spring as the time to add sunscreen to your skincare routine.

Consider additional forms of sun protection

Sunscreen isn’t our only guard from the sun. If you intend to spend lots of time outside as the weather gets warmer, consider additional forms of sun protection for another layer between you and those UV rays, like a lightweight headscarf or a hat.

Double cleanse

Double cleansing — which consists of cleansing your face twice, once with an oil-based cleanser and once with a water-based cleanser — is a great way to get everything off your face. It’s good to incorporate in the spring when you’re spending more time outside.

Get more antioxidants

Antioxidants are another great way to protect your skin from the elements. Incorporate more of them into your diet and your skincare routine through products like a vitamin C serum.

Use a toner

Toner removes any extra bits of debris from your face, minimizes pores, hydrates, and balances the skin, all of which are key to maintaining good skin in the springtime. Add one to your routine this season.

Use a gentle cleanser

If you’re making any major adjustments to your skincare routine, like exfoliating more or trying a new toner, consider using a gentle cleanser so you’re not being so harsh on your skin. A new cleanser is another change, but it’ll soothe your skin rather than irritate it.

Add an eye cream

Our eyes need to be hydrated, too, so add an eye cream to your skincare routine. Your skin will thank you as the weather changes.

Get a facial

If possible, get a facial to slough off all your dead skin from the winter and start fresh for the spring. Work with a trusted professional to determine the best option.

Use a hydrating mist

Hydrating mists are great products to use at the end of your skincare routine, as well as throughout the day. If you feel your skin getting dry, spray some hydrating mist to revitalize.

Review all your products
Shutterstock
If you’re a skincare fanatic, you probably have a huge build-up of products in your drawers. Take some time in the spring to review what you’re using and what you don’t need, and get rid of any extraneous products to avoid adding an unnecessary step to your routine.

Use a face mask

Remember, hydration is key during these transitional periods, and masks can help with that. Find a good mask that aids in hydration and helps keep your skin feeling and looking its best.

Add a retinol

If you want great skin for summer, consider adding a retinol product to your routine. These products have proved to help clear skin. Just be mindful of when you’re applying it, because sun exposure and retinol do not mix well.

Switch up your makeup products
Shutterstock
Because it sits on your face, makeup is just as much a part of skincare as your actual skincare products. If you’ve been using a heavy cream foundation in the winter to combat dryness, consider switching to something lighter weight or of a different formula to complement the change in weather and your skin.

Have some makeup-free days

Going without makeup from time to time is important as it gives your skin a break. Take some days, especially when the weather is at its peak in transition, to go without makeup and give your skin a chance to adjust.

Indulge in fresh produce

Good skin comes from within. Take advantage of the uptick in fresh produce in the spring in the name of health and skincare.

Ease into the changes

Any major change to your skincare routine carries risks, so be mindful when adjusting, especially when using new products. Ease into the changes, and don’t make more than a couple of major changes at once.

Be more consistent

It’s hard to resolve to be more consistent with your skincare routine in the winter, but use the change in weather as motivation to make a healthy adjustment. Consistency is just as important as the products you use, so establish a routine and stick to it this spring.
