From weighing over 500 lbs to becoming a 100-mile ultramarathoner, Matthew Bickel’s journey proves that with the right fitness program, you can reach your desired weight in no time.

At his heaviest, the Colorado resident had reached 532 lbs. Today, the 45-year-old Bickel has lost a staggering 252 lbs and is all set to compete in the Leadville Trail 100, a 100-mile ultramarathon held at high altitude in Colorado this August.

In an interview with Men’s Health, Bickel revealed, “I began with walks and hikes. I got very passionate about hiking and nature! I walked every single day in the mountains. I also switched to water as my only beverage and learned how to cook healthy food.”

His functional fitness program was based on consistent lifestyle changes and a dedication to fitness.

For most of his life, Matthew Bickel struggled with his weight, which took a toll on his body, confidence, and quality of life. He gained a pound every month, and after a while, everyday activities became increasingly difficult.

“At my heaviest, a typical meal for me looked like a Thanksgiving dinner or birthday meal for most people. I ate massive portions, with no consideration for the nutritional value of any of the food. I’d have an entire pizza, six sodas, and a big dessert, like six cookies.”

Bickel eventually discovered CrossFit and became heavily involved in functional fitness.

“I slowly got back into the gym and eventually discovered CrossFit. I got super into functional fitness, which led me to cycling and running.”

How Functional Fitness Helped Matthew Bickel Lose 252 Lbs?

Like many successful weight-loss journeys, Bickel started small. The first step was daily walks and hikes, as per his Men’s Health interview. They helped him build endurance, but without stressing his body. And while his daily activities were in check, he doubled down to improve his nutrition.

He replaced sugary beverages with water and learned how to prepare healthier meals at home. The results came within six months, and he lost 100 lbs. For over 15 years, he kept on gaining and losing weight, and eventually lost 252 lbs.

Now, he is on track for one of the toughest endurance races in America. All thanks to the functional fitness approach he adopted.

He explained that his current training routine is heavily focused on building endurance through a variety of high-volume workouts and competitive events.

“I’m deep in ultra-endurance preparation, training 15 to 20 hours per week with a mix of running, hiking, stair‑climbing, speedwork, and long Zone 2 cardio sessions. I’ve already completed several significant endurance efforts, including three HYROX competitions in 36 hours.”

Bickel is an inspiration for everyone who is struggling to reach their goals, and there are many more stories like his.
