Most powerlifters hang up their gloves once they age. Jade Dickens refuses to do so, even after an injury.

The 52-year-old bodybuilder from San Antonio recently made headlines after she clinched her US Strongman Nationals title in Iowa in the 50+ lightweight category. That too after weathering a serious knee replacement surgery only a year and a half back.

Grabbing the first spot in Cedar Rapids on June 6, Dickens threw light on the difficulties of achieving such a massive milestone in her fifties.

“As we age, you know, that kind of thing, those doubts creep into our minds,” she told 25 News KXXV.

A total knee replacement debacle, only 18 months prior, only added to the complication.

“You think a major surgery like that is just going to take you out,” said Dickens via the YouTube video. “But it also shows you that it didn’t, and it’s actually even made me better,” Dickens explained.

In fact, not only was the Strongman an impressive feat in itself, but it also drove her recovery.

“I carried a 450-pound yoke on my back for 50 feet on a brand-new knee replacement… I couldn’t have done that if I had not already had the muscle built,” revealed Dickens, who had competed 6 months after the surgery, too.

Beyond competition, her influence also expands to the strength community.

Dickens passes the baton to the Gatesville community

Dickens grew up in a volatile family, moving at least 21 times and changing 13 schools. Yet, when asked about her hometown, “Gatesville” spills out of her lips in an instant.

“It’s not where I grew up. It’s where I have planted roots, where my kids grew up,” she revealed in the same interview.

To give back to the community, the bodybuilder hosts frequent lifting meets in Gatesville for both kids and adults.

As someone who bootstrapped her way to the top, inspired by a single weightlifting TV show, Dickens shared her two cents on what it takes to succeed in the sport.

“Stop stopping.”

There can’t be a more concise assessment of fitness.

Now, having conquered the American stage, she’s headed to Norway next for her upcoming meet, as 25 News KXXV reported, where Dickens will stay for 2 weeks.
