The definitive ranking of Thanksgiving foods, from hard pass to pass us a plate

The hype for Halloween and Christmas can often leave Thanksgiving feeling like the forgotten middle child, but that should be far from the case. While the other two have countless movies, decor, and endless excitement around them, Thanksgiving is just as great because it’s got the most, and arguably some of the best, food. Again, some of the best because not every dish served is an all-star. A few dishes could be left off the grocery list, while others are VIP, no doubt. So let’s look at these Thanksgiving dishes, starting with the ones people can start to omit and the ones that are so good we hope they never quit.

Unless this is a personal favorite of everyone at the table, Brussels sprouts are a waste of space.

Let’s face it: Thanksgiving is a gluttonous holiday, so dulling it down with healthy options like raw carrots and celery is a shame.

Green bean casserole always looks like something infected. No matter how great it’s prepared.

Chips and dips

Chips and dips are fine, just so long as Thanksgiving is dedicated to the big football game. If it’s more of a traditional family affair, then don’t toss some Doritos in a bowl and hope for the best. It’ll end up the worst.

This can be great, but it can also be a watery disaster. If one cannot prepare it right, don’t even try it. Move on to something that’s easier to execute.

Deviled eggs

Unless this is a personal favorite that more than two people are going to indulge in, don’t. They’ll just start smelling up the place, and who wants that eggy smell to override the beautiful aromas of good food for that?

Corn from a can is fine on a Tuesday but for Thanksgiving? One can take it, leave it, or at least serve it on a cob.

Toss those carrots in butter with brown sugar and elevate Bugs Bunny’s favorite dish.

Corn pudding is how one can take creamed corn and make it appetizing. If this hasn’t been on your menu, add it.

Come for the marshmallows, stay for the sweet potatoes.

Dinner rolls

Everyone can agree with Oprah Winfrey when she proclaimed, “I love bread!” So good, that even store-bought rolls can make a person self-indulgent.

Apple cider

Apple cider is a million times better than eggnog, and it’s time people start putting some respect on it. Plus, it helps make a great cranberry sauce.

Typically, ham is a Christmas main course, but on Thanksgiving, it gets to be the delicious opening act.

Does one really have to make the argument as to why apple pie is one of the most superior foods at Thanksgiving? Yeah, no. It’s amazing, and it’s pie.

Gravy can’t ride alone, but just because it’s a supporting cast member doesn’t mean it’s not one of the best parts of the meal.

Whether it’s shaped like the can it came from or homemade, cranberry sauce is that girl.

Turkey

Turkey has always been the Grand Marshall of the Thanksgiving dinner table parade, but it’s not the best because there are a few sides that truly outshine it each and every year, no matter who’s hosting.

Even the stuffing from the box is fantastic. That’s how good it is!

Thanksgiving would not be the same without pumpkin pie, which is even better when topped with whipped cream or ice cream.

Macaroni and cheese

Macaroni and cheese blends carbs with cheese, and that’s just a winning combination each and every time it steps up to the plate, or rather, when people fill their plates.
