2016 MLB playoff teams that won't make it back this season
Last season saw two MLB franchises with historic championship droughts face off in World Series. As you know, the Cubs finally broke through, while the Indians’ championship-less streak continues.
Those weren’t the only two teams to play baseball in October, however, and some of 2016’s postseason participants are bound to bow out before the playoffs begin this year. Welcome to the Yardbarker roundtable, where we look at the Cubs, Indians, Dodgers, Blue Jays, Giants, Red Sox, Nationals, Rangers, Mets and Orioles and wonder:
Which 2016 playoff teams won’t be in the race this year and why?
Phillip Barnett: In the AL, the Baltimore Orioles could be the odd team out this year. They snuck into the 2016 playoffs and didn't really improve the back of their rotation much. They'll score plenty of runs, but it's hard to imagine them keeping enough runs off the board to hold off teams like the Astros and even the Mariners for this year's final Wild Card spot knowing that the Blue Jays are almost a lock for that first spot if they stay healthy.
In the NL, the Mets are the most likely team to fall out of the playoff picture. The Giants addressed their biggest issue by bringing in Mark Melancon, and the Cardinals should be much improved with Dexter Fowler roaming center field in St. Louis. Even the Colorado Rockies look like they might have *just* enough pitching to make a push for the second Wild Card spot in a top heavy NL West.
Matt Whitener: The Baltimore Orioles finished up strong during the final week of the season and inched into the AL Wild Card play-in game before falling to the Toronto Blue Jays. This year, however, it seems as if there are far more holes without clear resolutions. They have a young rotation that is dependent a lot of previously unfulfilled potential all paying out at once. In addition, longtime catcher Matt Wieters is gone, the lineup is still over reliant on the long ball and they are in the midst of the game's toughest jungle in the AL East. The odds just seem a bit stacked on tilting off the edge away from the postseason, as opposed to toward it.
Shiloh Carder: I think the Orioles top this list. They relied a lot on hitting the big home runs (and a lot of them) last year and that bullpen, but I'm not that sold on the pitching staff. It's average at best, and that may not cut it in the competitive AL East.
David Matthews: I think the Orioles are too easy a choice to make here, so I'm going to go out on a limb and nominate the Rangers. The Astros are loaded up for this year with the additions of Carlos Beltran, Josh Reddick and Brian McCann. And they still have Carlos Correa and Jose Altuve, among others. The Mariners also got better. The top of their lineup is filthy, and their outfield is going to feature three natural center fielders at once. Give pitchers Felix Hernandez and James Paxton run support and solid defense, and the wins will pile up.
Demetrius Bell: The Orioles may have seen a golden chance to make a decent playoff run slip away after they decided that they didn't want to use Zach Britton in the Wild Card game. Now, they've got to deal with a division that's only gotten better over the offseason while they haven't exactly loaded up, and that's even with them having an MVP candidate in Manny Machado and the new Captain America in Adam Jones. It's going to be very tough in the AL East, and it might be too tough for Baltimore.
Jamie Neal: The Orioles and Dodgers are going to miss the playoffs this year because they don't seem to have all the pieces put together yet. The Orioles are a nice story, but I think the Yankees are going to put together a solid season and the Red Sox/Blue Jays still reside in the AL East as well. The Dodgers spend money like nobody's business, but that doesn't build a cohesive team. Throwing money at players only does so much, and that's not quite enough this year.

New suitor emerges for Diamondbacks third baseman Eugenio Suarez
The Arizona Diamondbacks have plenty of suitors for third baseman Eugenio Suarez. A new team has reportedly entered the market for his services. Scott Lauber of the Philadelphia Inquirer reported that the Phillies have reached out regarding Suarez. While Lauber did not provide any indication as to whether or not those talks have gained traction, the Phillies are an intriguing suitor for the Diamondbacks' third baseman. The Phillies' interest may be a recent development. Jon Heyman of the New York Post speculated on Friday that the Phillies could emerge as a suitor in the wake of third baseman Alec Bohm landing on the injured list with a fractured left rib. Suarez is in the midst of what is arguably his best season thus far. He has produced a .249/.321/.587 batting line in 421 plate appearances entering Saturday with 36 homers and a major league-leading 87 RBI. Suarez would be more than just another powerful bat in the lineup. Designated hitter Kyle Schwarber and first baseman Bryce Harper are both left-handed hitters — adding Suarez would provide more balance in the batting order. He would also provide a counter against opposing managers bringing in a lefty reliever to face Schwarber and Harper. The biggest question would be how the Phillies would handle an eventual logjam on the roster. Bohm is expected to return from the IL in mid-August and would not have a clear path to regular at-bats if Suarez were acquired. Schwarber could theoretically return to left field to open up playing time at the DH spot, but his outfield defense is mediocre at best. However, as the Phillies are also looking to upgrade the outfield, where Max Kepler and Brandon Marsh have been disappointments, adding Suarez could solve several problems in one fell swoop.
WNBA legend Lisa Leslie had three words for Angel Reese
Now in her second WNBA season, Chicago Sky forward Angel Reese is averaging a league‑leading 12.5 rebounds along with 13.8 points, 3.7 assists and 1.4 steals per game. She recently returned from injury and immediately picked up where she left off, posting her 16th double‑double of the season (11 points, 11 rebounds) on Tuesday night even as her Chicago Sky fell, 91-68, to the Minnesota Lynx. Then, on Wednesday, Reese showcased her brand power on Instagram, posting a pregame photo dressed head‑to‑toe in Gucci with the caption, "Don’t worry about me… life is GUCCI @gucci #guccipartner." The image quickly lit up her feed and drew an immediate response from one of the game’s all‑time greats, WNBA legend Lisa Leslie, who commented, “Yessss it is❤️." Despite flashes of elite play, the Sky have struggled mightily, standing at just 7-17 and sitting fifth in the Eastern Conference. Their 76.7 points per game rank 12th in the WNBA, and opponents are torching them for 86.8 a night (12th in the league). With head coach Tyler Marsh searching for consistency, every bright spot has been a welcome reprieve for a franchise that won the title as recently as 2021. Front and center among Chicago’s bright spots is Reese. Off the court, Reese has quickly built a burgeoning portfolio of endorsement deals, including Reebok, Calvin Klein, Beats by Dre, Amazon and now Gucci, underscoring her status as one of the WNBA’s brightest personalities. On the other side, you have Leslie, whose voice carries more weight than arguably anybody in women’s basketball. A three‑time league MVP, two‑time WNBA champion and Finals MVP and eight‑time All‑Star, Leslie helped define the league’s early years with the Los Angeles Sparks, including driving home the first dunk in WNBA history in 2002. A Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Famer (class of 2015), she remains a global ambassador for the sport.
Lakers' Luka Doncic Going Viral for Shocking Body Transformation
The Los Angeles Lakers have been very invested in getting Luka Doncic into better shape this offseason. After how poorly he played defense and how tired he looked against Minnesota in the playoffs, it has been their top priority. Doncic has never been the most fit player in the league. He is still one of the best players in the league, but he could be a lot better if he were less tired at the end of the season. So far this offseason, it looks like Doncic has been committed to the training program that the Lakers put him on. He looks like an entirely different player. The Lakers would be thrilled if Doncic were able to stay this fit all year long. He needs to be able to play better defense now that he is the face of the franchise, and that could be abetted by improved lateral quickness. A big reason why the Lakers lost to the Timberwolves in the playoffs is because of their inability to stop guards from penetrating the paint. The starting backcourt is not a good defensive one. Doncic isn't the only one to blame for poor perimeter defense. Austin Reaves isn't the best defender, either. The difference with him is that he at least tries to be in the right spot on defense. At times against the Wolves, he was too tired to actually stay in front of some of the players who were attacking him. A large part of Minnesota's game plan was to get Doncic switched on to Anthony Edwards. Based on this video, he has a renewed commitment to doing that. Doncic likely has extra motivation to show the Dallas Mavericks what they decided to trade away. He wants to prove them wrong for deciding to get rid of him. After he was traded to the Lakers, Doncic averaged 28.2 points per game, 8.1 rebounds, and 7.5 assists per game. He shot 43.8 percent from the field and 37.9 percent from beyond the 3-point arc. Commanders Training Camp Observations: Terry McLaurin ends holdout but theres more to it, Jayden Daniels gets lick back at rising defender
The Washington Commanders are participating in their final training camp practices before the pads come on this week, and there was no shortage of headlines today. I was in Ashburn, Virginia on Sunday for the fourth practice of training camp for the Commanders and came away with a lot of observations on and off the field. It was a hot one as fans reported for the first time today and it ended up being well worth the heat. McLaurin ends holdout, but there's more to it Commanders All-Pro WR Terry McLaurin officially reported today for the first time since training camp kicked off, but he is still without a new contract. ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter posted on X that this does NOT mean progress has been made on a contract. He was also moved to the Active/PUP list with a reported ankle injury. HC Dan Quinn said before practice that the ankle injury is nothing new. “We knew at the end of last season the ankle was something that he was dealing with as it goes," Quinn told the media. "So, it's not so uncommon that that lingers into the offseason. . .We don't know much today. I'll have some more follow up. The medical side is doing the assessments and seeing where he is at." This is still a big step in the right direction with McLaurin being at Commanders Park and showing the team that he has done everything possible on his side. McLaurin also spent time with fans after practice even though he isn't practicing with the team and signed autographs. I also spotted McLaurin on the field with his agent Buddy Baker talking, so maybe this update today can put pressure on the Commanders to get a deal done. Expect an even better Mike Sainristil in his second season I can't express enough how impressed I am with Mike Sainristil. Every player on defense could be wearing a blank burgundy jersey and I could still point him out in every play because of his energy and how he flies around the ball. Sainristil was the talk of practice on Friday and he picked right back up on Sunday with a lot of pass breakups and an insane interception on a deep Jayden Daniels throw while covering rookie Jaylin Lane. Jayden Daniels and Jaylin Lane got their lick back One of the things I highlighted about McLaurin's absence is that other WRs get the chance to build a report with Jayden Daniels and they did just that today on arguably the best training camp play I've seen in my many many years of going. A few drills after Sainristil picked off the Daniels to Lane attempt, the franchise QB threw a DART to the corner of the end zone to the rookie Lane who lept over Sainristil AND safety Quan Martin for an unbelievable grab. The jury is still out on if he got both feet in, but I dont care, it was an incredible answer back at the defense after Sainristil got his interception and Daniels let him hear it after the grab. There's no lack of competitiveness between the young bucks on the team and it'll continue leading up to the season. The defense looks much improved I know I've been praising Sainristil a lot the last few days, but honestly the entire defense impressed me at practice for many reasons. After dominating practice Friday, the corners collected more pass breakups today and the defensive line rotations generated pressure and would-be sacks. Adding pads will make the practices even more physical and competitve and the defense can really flex it's muscles starting next week. I think a lot of my worries about the defense have been calmed for now. Commanders will honor Washington legend The Commanders also announced at training camp that they will honor an all-time great by inducting former WR Santana Moss into the Ring of Fame Week 1 against the New York Giants. Moss was surprised when he heard the news and even addressed the crowd on hand at training camp to express his gratitude and appreciation. The "Cowboy-Killa" was one of the few bright spots in the darkest times as a Washington fan and I can honestly say he deserves it. The franchise continues to make the right moves off the field for those that paved the way for the current state of the team. Moss also continues to give back as an analyst for the team's broadcast team.
