Reese McGuire came to the Chicago White Sox in a trade prior to the 2022 season. The White Sox sent catcher and former first-round draft pick Zack Collins to the Toronto Blue Jays in exchange for McGuire. The veteran catcher was expected to provide left-handed hitting and olid defense behind the dish. Things just didn't work out in the long run as McGuire appeared in 53 games before being dealt to the Boston Red Sox at the trade deadline.

Reese McGuire's 2022 Season

McGuire helped soften the blow of losing catcher Yasmani Grandal to injury. The former Blue Jay entered the starting lineup when Grandal had off days or went on the injured list. When Grandal was on the shelf, the White Sox recalled Seby Zavala, who eventually became the backup down the home stretch of the season. However, McGuire provided some respectable production during his time in Chicago.

The White Sox backstop hit .304/.351/.377 in a span of 24 games between May 22 and July 5. Grandal returned to the lineup on July 22 and a week later McGuire was dealt to Boston, where he hit well for the remainder of the year.

Grandal's return and Zavala's improvement made McGuire expendable. With Garrett Crochet out for the entire season and Aaron Bummer on on the IL for three months, the White Sox were in dire need of left-handed relief pitching. Chicago eventually acquired Jake Diekman from Boston in exchange for McGuire, and the results were mixed, to say the least.

The veteran backstop was not a key component to the 2022 White Sox success but did a respectable job in a small amount of games.

What's On Tap Next?

As things currently stand, the Chicago White Sox will enter 2023 with Grandal and Zavala behind the dish. Earlier in the offseason, the White Sox were involved in trade rumors regarding Oakland A's catcher Sean Murphy. That noise has since quieted as free agency has been much more prominent than the trade market on the MLB hot stove.
