The Orioles have been besieged by pitching injuries this year. And, the hits continued on August 12, as the O’s won’t see Zach Eflin or Felix Bautista return this year. Additionally, the Astros lost their closer in the interim, and a former AL All-Star will miss his second straight season.
Felix Bautista will not return for the rest of the 2025 season, as he won’t have enough time to rehab his right shoulder. It ends what was Bautista’s first action in the Majors since late 2023 before undergoing Tommy John surgery.
Also, per the team, Zach Eflin will undergo a lumbar microdiscectomy for his back, ending his 2025 season.
Eflin gave up more hard-hit contact this season compared to 2024, as his 9.4 Barrel% this year was almost two full percentage points (7.5%) higher compared to last season. The right-hander will be a free agent after this year.
After seven starts, Tony Gonsolin‘s 2025 season is over.
Gonsolin underwent an internal brace and flexor tendon cleanup operation, per the Dodgers. It comes with an eight-to-ten month recovery, meaning Gonsolin could be out until the middle of 2026.
The Rays announced just before their game on August 11 that Shane McClanahan needed season-ending surgery to try to repair a nerve that’s given the left-hander trouble this year. The operation, one targeted to clean up the area around a nerve in his left triceps, occurred on the 11th.
McClanahan pitched in Spring Training and was scheduled to start for Tampa on Opening Day. However, he went on the IL shortly before the start of the season and did not pitch at all in the Majors.
Additionally, the Rays confirmed on August 12 that Taylor Walls is on the IL with a left groin strain.
Chris Sale struck out two over two innings (40 pitches) for Gwinnett (AAA) on August 12. Sale maxed out at 96 MPH with his four-seamer and averaged 94 MPH.
Royals infielder/outfielder Jac Caglianone picked up three hits in his first four at-bats for Omaha (AAA).
Mets pitcher Tylor Megill struck out four over 1.2 IP (41 pitches) for Binghamton (AA).
Astros closer Josh Hader landed on the 15-day IL with a left shoulder strain.
