2025 Injury Report: Updates on Berrios, Keaschall, Laureano

Several playoff-bound teams, as well as hopefuls, are dealing with notable injuries heading into the final weekend. Blue Jays pitcher Jose Berrios went on the IL, adding another pitcher to that list for Toronto. Meanwhile, in San Diego, the Padres won’t have one of their best hitters over the last two months available against the Cubs next week.

Updates on Blue Jays’ injuries

The Blue Jays placed pitcher Jose Berrios on the 15-day IL with right elbow inflammation, further complicating their pitching plans for the postseason.

Berrios, who was moved to the bullpen this month, has been dealing with the elbow injury for some time, per manager John Schneider.

Toronto is also without Chris Bassitt. Bassitt received a cortisone shot on the 24th and will resume throwing on September 26.

Since Bassitt was placed on the IL retroactive to September 19, the right-hander won’t be available to come back until the ALDS.

Meanwhile, the Jays continue to wait on Bo Bichette. Schneider stated that there’s been some progress on the PCL sprain he suffered but the team is still taking it day-to-day.

Laureano to miss opening round

Padres outfielder Ramon Laureano suffered a fractured right finger during San Diego’s game on the 24th against the Brewers.

Per manager Mike Shildt, Laureano will miss the team’s opening round series. With the Dodgers clinching the NL West on September 25, the Padres are locked into a first-round matchup with the Cubs.

Horton trending towards WC round

The Cubs, meanwhile, hope to have starter Cade Horton available for that series.

Horton, who left his start on September 23 with back tightness, went for an MRI earlier this week. On the 25th, manager Craig Counsell stated that Horton should be ready to go for the Wild Card round.

However, that MRI did yield some “areas of concern” that the Cubs are monitoring. The main concern, per Counsell, is to ensure he can pitch without harm.

The team will have another physician look over his results.

Keaschall done for year

Twins infielder Luke Keaschall is officially done for 2025, as Minnesota placed him on the 10-day IL with a thumb sprain.

Keaschall will likely need surgery to repair the injury.

Other injury news

Astros shortstop Jeremy Pena, out since September 21, is dealing with an oblique strain.

Bryce Harper and J.T. Realmuto returned to the Phillies’ lineup. Both missed the Phillies’ game on September 24. The Phillies, though, are unsure whether Trea Turner will see any action before the playoffs.

Rays first baseman Yandy Diaz left on September 25 with groin tightness.
